Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Cyber Security Technical, Systems or Senior Systems Analyst located at Columbus General Office, Gerald Gentleman Station, Kearney Operations Center, Norfolk Operations Center, York Operations Center . Position closes June 18, 2021 at 11:59 Central Time.
The incumbent’s primary role is to support the District’s corporate cyber security. This will include the implementation and support of firewalls, endpoint protection tools, intrusion detection, SIEM, vulnerability scanning and security assessments in both NPPD business and operations networks. This will require the individual to become familiar with the District’s corporate cyber security program.
Education, Training and Experience
Cyber Security Technical Analyst
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (OR) an Associates’ degree and 3 years technical IT, utility Engineering related experience (OR) a high school diploma/GED and 6 years technical IT or experience including utility or cyber security specific experience.
Cyber Security Systems Analyst
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field and 3 years technical IT, utility engineering, or related experience (OR) an Associates’ degree and 6 years technical IT experience (OR) a high school diploma/GED and 9 years technical IT experience including cyber security specific experience.
Cyber Security Senior Systems Analyst:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field and 5 years technical IT, utility engineering, or related experience (OR) an Associate’s degree and 8 years technical IT experience (OR) a high school diploma/GED and 10 years technical IT experience.
Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others on multiple activities, with flexibility to manage competing demands and changing priorities
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills
Excellent analytical problem-solving skills
Must be customer-service oriented and adaptable to ongoing change
Licenses and/or Certifications
Security Clearance (All Levels)
Must satisfy any existing and future District security clearance or background check requirements for position duties (e.g. Nuclear Safeguards, FBI InfraGard, NERC, etc).
Cyber Security Analyst(all levels)
Obtain and maintain CompTIA Security+ within one (1) year of accepting the position, or by obtaining a higher Certification level.
Obtain and maintain CompTIA CySA+ or a SANS GIAC Certification within two (2) years of accepting the position.
If the Incumbent will be conducting vulnerability assessments, CEH Certified Ethical Hacker is required within two (2) years.
Cyber Security Systems Analyst
Obtain and maintain one or more of the following professional certifications within three (3) years of accepting the position:
a. SANS Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP) and/or
b. CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP)
Cyber Security Senior Systems Analyst
Obtain and maintain one or more of the following professional certifications within two (2) years of accepting the position:
a. CISSP (ISC2) Certified Information Systems Security Professional, and/or
b. CISA (ISACA) Certified Information Systems Auditor, and/or
c. Multiple Professional Security certification approved by the Cyber Security Manager
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Perform analysis, design, development, and hands-on configuration and maintenance of information systems, networks, and security solutions to protect the confidentiality, availability, integrity, and trustworthiness of key business processes and supporting information and digital systems.
Incumbent will become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on one or more corporate security systems such as firewall, intrusion detection, anti-virus or vulnerability scanning.
Initiate and process requests to install, upgrade and change system configuration. Modify procedures and policies to reflect new or additional cyber security systems.
Provide technical assistance and advice to those who install, administer, and update computer-based access control systems so that unauthorized use will be immediately detected and acted on. Conceive new approaches that will allow greater standardization and more effective management of information security measures. Review and monitor logs kept by computer and network access control systems to detect attempts at unauthorized use, update evidentiary records per procedures, and appropriately inform and escalate matters for resolution. Develop (e.g. scripting) and use automated mechanisms to help streamline the analysis of security related activities to discover patterns and evidence of problems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (Continued)
Serve as the liaison between Telecommunications, Infrastructure, Application and Support Services for all cyber security issues; Play a key support role in audits as needed; and, Collaborate and provide guidance for the implementation of Cyber Security improvements related to meeting local, state and federal compliance requirements as provided by FERC, NERC, and other regulatory agencies.
Maintain awareness of latest developments in the information security field, including new products and services, energy industry trends and issues, through sources such as on-line news services, technical magazines, professional associates, industry conferences, training seminars, and other information sources. Monitor current and proposed laws, regulations, industry standards, and ethical requirements related to information security and privacy.
Play an active role in developing and enhancing information security solution frameworks, policy, procedures, and other requirements in collaboration with stakeholders. Review the cost-effectiveness and practicality of existing information security procedures and systems and make suggestions for improvements. Support other security related and risk mitigating solutions (e.g. Physical Security System, etc.).

Pay Grade - 12 Monthly Exempt (Technical Analyst)
Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $ 5,582 - $6,978
Pay Grade - 13 Monthly Exempt (Systems Analyst)
Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $6,261 - $7,826
Pay Grade - 14 Monthly Exempt (Senior Systems Analyst)
Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range - $7,082 - $9,030
Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
