Position Specific Description

The position advertised is for a Shift Production Specialist (Power Plant Operator – Control Room & Field Qualified). This position sits within the Power Generation Division which is responsible for all of NextEra Energy's non-nuclear generation operations, exceeding 40,000 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity. Wyman Station is located on Cousins Island in Yarmouth, Maine, and Cape Station is located on Portland Harbor in South Portland, Maine. Combined, the units total 750 megawatts. In addition to the responsibilities below, this individual will work a 12-hour rotating shift. This person will work as a Power Plant Operator being represented by the Bargaining Unit at the plant. The position will require that the candidate join the Bargaining Unit per the collective bargaining agreement.

SPECIFIC JOB CONDITIONS:

  • Performs the duties of aShift Production Specialist. (Power Plant Control Room Operator/Field Operator)

  • Follows all the safe work practices and procedures.

  • Perform the functions of a Control Room Operator on all Wyman Station Units, responsible for safe & reliable operation of power generation equ i pment. Monitors performance to identify operating characteristics, taking necessary actions to prevent or limit failure, to optimize efficiency, identifies root cause and countermeasures.

  • Understands and can follow procedures for compliance with all environmental regulations and applicable NERC Standards.

  • Perform the d uties of all outside operator positions.

  • Perform the d uties of one ( 1 ) maintenance craft or two (2) PT skills (M/E/I).

  • Performs repair and preventative maintenance, when assigned, to ensure the safe and reliable functioning of the equipment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Preferred qualifications: (External Candidates)

    State of Maine Stationary Engineers License (4th class or higher)

    Experience operating conventional power plants - oil fired boilers and steam turbines

    Experience with operating power plants or related equipment utilizing Distributed Control Systems – Ovation, Honeywell, Bailey, Foxboro, etc.

    Intermediate level or higher skill set in Power Plant Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation & Control crafts.

    Experience with Boiler Water Chemistry & Demineralizer operations and maintenance.

Job Overview

This is a multi-functional classification that combines the skills of a plant Control Center Operator with that of a maintenance journey level discipline, (mechanical, electrical, and instrument & control). The individual functions to provide real time surveillance and operation of all control room systems and equipment, operates controls and supervises instruments inside a control room containing boiler, turbine, generator and transmission line control boards.Under direct or general supervision, directs the operation of all plant equipment as required to maintain proper operating conditions. May perform maintenance duties when not required to work in the control room, to the extent they are capable, qualified and able to perform in a safe manner.

Accountabilities:

  • Assures appropriate configuration of plant control room systems

  • Monitors performance and operating characteristics of boiler, turbine, generator and transmission line, and operates associated controls taking necessary actions to prevent or limit failure and optimize efficiency.

  • Completes appropriate documentation for accuracy of accounting and/or equipment history.

  • Identify equipment problems prior to lost function of the unit.

  • Issues and/or executes in-plant clearance orders as required.

  • Functions as designed in support of other classifications and their respective accountability.

  • Performs associated responsibilities according to the rules incorporated in the safe work practices handbook and the Memorandum of Agreement.

Required Qualification

  • Must be qualified in at least one maintenance journey level discipline (mechanical, electrical, and instrument & control)

  • 5 years of power plant operations experience

  • 2 years control room operations experience
