National Grid Lead Specialist - Telecom in Worcester, Massachusetts

Job Purpose

  • Overall general management responsibility for the operational and budget performance of the Telecom Group.

  • Directly manage the Telecom Group employees and activities for this area.

  • Implement and monitor all company policies, procedures, standards, and labor agreements assigned to this area of responsibility.

  • Coordinate training for assigned area of responsibility.

Key Accountabilities

  • Overall general management responsibility and complete accountability for the operational and budget performance of their assigned areas

• Manage and monitor work of the department technicians maintaining core values of safety, efficiency, responsibility and service

• Ensure maintenance programs are completed to regulatory and company standards, including required documentation using approved databases and applications

• Perform and document mandated NPCC and NERC reliability maintenance of the protection system

• Interact with Telecom and Meter Engineering to ensure all required standards and operating procedures are adhered to

• Ensure telecom and wholesale metering disturbances are reviewed to determine correct operation of the equipment

• Develop and implement appropriate responses to system conditions including equipment failures, outages and storms

• Manage field investigations of telecom and metering problems and ensure that follow-up actions are executed in an appropriate time frame

• Review plans and make recommendations and/or propose operational limitations to ensure the integrity of the telecom system

• Provide technical support to Divisions and System Control Centers

• Ensure project drawings and documentation are reviewed and necessary feedback is provided to ensure that all projects will result in the highest quality

• Develop project grade estimates for communication systems and associated equipment

• Develop, review and manage construction project plans including milestones, construction sequence and cut-over plans

• Ensure test and maintenance procedures are designed to meet system standards, uncover any defects in engineering or construction while keeping telecom outages to a minimum

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Actively builds and maintains a network of relationships, outside of normal business contacts.

  • Effectively lead committees and/or teams.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent combination of a degree and experience.

• Ten years of experience in a telecommunications related field with a thorough knowledge of both telecom theory and application.

• Strong knowledge of National Grid policies, procedures, standards, and labor agreements.

• A high level of analytical, coaching and intervention skills and the ability to use creative problem solving techniques in a team environment.

• Strong Oral and Written communications skills.

• Must possess strong team building skills, with the ability to lead and motivate employees, and a willingness to champion organizational change.

Ability to work off-hours and on-call and travel for system emergencies.
