Mechanical Engineer – Design Support (National Carbon Capture Center)

This position will be located at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) in Wilsonville, AL

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing Mechanical Engineering design support for new and retro-fit applications at a Pilot-scale clean coal/carbon capture research facility. Work will primarily be related to mechanical equipment additions/modifications and associated piping. Candidate will take the lead on mechanical design activities and provide oversight and technical direction to other engineers and designers. Must be comfortable working in a Plant construction environment and capable of working proficiently both as part of a team and independently.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other technical degree is required; A degree from an ABET accredited college or university is preferred.

  • Must have a minimum of 6 months of professional and/or internship experience.

  • Chemical or Mechanical Engineering degree strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering design principles.

  • Piping design experience (liquid and gas systems preferred.

  • Experience with mechanical drawings including P&ID’s, piping, vessel and general arrangement drawings.

  • Working knowledge of common MS office applications.

The following skills are strongly preferred:

  • Familiar with mechanical design codes and standards including ASME B31.3.

  • General working knowledge of process equipment including piping, valves (manual/control/relief), pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, compressors, fans.

The following skills are a plus:

  • Autodesk Suite/Vault experience.

  • ASME Section VIII code experience.

  • Relief valve sizing experience, especially chemical applications.

  • Familiar with process equipment that includes absorption columns, stripper columns, reboilers and plate & frame heat exchangers.

  • Experience with fluid flow programs (Arrow, Fathom, Pipe-Flo, etc)

  • Piping stress and flexibility analysis.

  • Advanced degree(s), certifications, licenses, and/or training in a relevant technical field/discipline would be a plus.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and manage the design/technical portion of project scope, schedule and budget. Includes working with process engineers in the conceptual development of projects and generating mechanical cost estimates for projects.

  • Generation and review of technical specifications including equipment/material specifications.

  • Evaluation of proposals for mechanical equipment.

  • Specification and requisition of mechanical / process equipment and all associated piping and components.

  • Mechanical design calculations.

  • Piping system design including pipe sizing, routing, material selection, pipe support design and valve selection.

  • Generation of drawings including PFD’s, P&ID’s, mechanical layouts, general arrangements and isometrics for mechanical piping and equipment (with support from mechanical designers).

  • Proficiency in problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal / communications skills.

  • Make sound independent decisions with minimal information and consultation with management.

  • Communicate with other groups and disciplines to ensure successful project implementation.

  • Discipline-level participation responsibility for Design Hazard Reviews.

  • Assist in the checkout, testing and startup of systems when necessary.

  • Field support ranging from the generation of field installation packages to construction engineering support.
