New York Power Authority Director Employee and Executive Communications in White Plains, New York
The Director, Employee and Executive Communications is responsible for development and implementing internal and executive communications activities that communicate the NYPA and Canals mission, vision and values to employees and the public. Manages the team that inspire and strengthen trust, understanding and engagement to connect internal audiences with NYPA’s innovative vision to achieve New York State’s clean energy, resiliency, and economic development goals. Advances the NYPA story and strengthens and protects its reputation via thought leadership programs and internal communications events and activities.
•Develop and manage projects incorporating innovative communications solutions and metrics that drive commitment and engagement among NYPA and Canals employees.
•Supervise and plan for a variety of communications needs, including executive communications, HR communications, materials to support utility operations/commercial operations/economic development/Environmental Justice & Sustainability/energy efficiency project development initiatives, and other efforts.
•Develop and implement, in conjunction with Senior Director, Corporate Communications, an executive thought leadership program spanning internal and external channels.
•Project management and integrated communications efforts, along with Senior Director, Corporate Communications, aligning efforts of communicators, creative services, social media, media relations, etc.
•Create and enhance channels for increasing internal communication outlets for employees.
•Manage/build team of communication professionals with strong project management, writing and strategic vision skills.
•Build relationships across NYPA and Canals and remain abreast of their key communications projects for holistic messaging on all communications platforms. Solidify close, integrated relationship with Media Relations to form a holistic communications structure for all projects. Inform colleagues of opportunities for collaborative, cross-discipline, or discipline-specific communications.
•Counsel and be comfortable working with all levels of management, directing and influencing highly matrixed teams across business units.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Academic training in communications strategies and skills, with a minimum of 12 years corporate communications experience.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills; editing experience is critical.
•Ability to adapt style to the demands of the audience. Must have a sound knowledge of communications technologies.
•Strong research and analytic ability.
•Strong planning skills with ability to respond well to changing priorities and deadline pressure.
•Persuasive in negotiating communications approaches and solutions and capable of adapting style to fit the assignment.
•Strong managerial skills with the ability to train and develop the communications staff, effectively guiding their work and interdepartmental task forces/project requestors.
•Ability to coordinate the activities of all persons involved in projects to assure on-time products that meet goals.
•The position requires a singular combination of management, creative and journalistic skills.
•Solid computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Internet research ability, desktop publishing (Adobe) experience a plus; knowledge of digital platforms and their use
Education, Experience and Certifications
•Bachelor's (or Master's) degree in communications, English, or journalism; or equivalent experience.
•Extensive editing experience.
•Minimum of 12 years of increasingly responsible experience in corporate communications, journalism, or related field
•Approximately 10% travel, mostly within New York State
•Ability to work demanding and sometimes irregular hours as dictated by deadlines, events, and specific initiatives.
•Valid Driver’s License
