Job Description

The Director Corporate Finance is responsible for leading NYPA’s financial structuring and investment activities for distributed generation, energy efficiency investments, and large scale renewables. The Director provides financial advisory and strategic support to C-Level Executives and NYPA’s Board of Trustees on a variety of topics including project finance, asset valuation, acquisitions, new business opportunities, energy services finance and other projects requested by senior management. The Director is also responsible for overseeing the creation and maintenance of detailed financial models for solar rooftop, microgrid or distributed generation, and energy efficiency projects, as well as other corporate financing needs, and leads the due diligence process, engage various internal business units and external consultants, and structure and negotiate deal terms and conditions.

  • Lead the NYPA’s finance due diligence team in evaluating new project/business opportunities.

  • Make investment recommendations to C-level executives and board members

  • Provide advisory to NYPA’s long-term financial strategy for project investment as needed by the CFO, Treasurer, and VP of Finance

  • Interact with other NY state agencies and lead discussions representing interests for NYPA and its customers

  • Lead the creation and maintenance of detailed financial models for various energy and transmission projects, including performing sensitivity analysis, and assessing detailed federal and state tax implications for individual projects

  • Lead the development and maintenance of detailed financial model attributes including but not limited to Engineering, Procurement and Construction and Operations & Maintenance models

  • Lead project financing and other transaction negotiations including but not limited to power purchase agreements, purchase and sale agreements, and debt financing agreements.

  • Oversee the development of key transaction materials including valuation analysis and management presentations

  • Perform various economic/valuation analysis of NYPA’s business units and any other special/ advanced analysis as directed by the CFO, Treasurer, or VP of Finance

  • Monitor the trends and competitive dynamics within the energy sector by analyzing the financial statements and operating metrics of public companies within the sector

  • Manage the work activities of a finance solutions team providing clear direction. Communicate regularly with staff to maximize effectiveness and productivity

  • Manage, mentor and provide development guidance to a team of financial analysts, with constructive feedback on projects, goals and accomplishments

  • Review performance of staff; establish work performance goals and review individual goals each appraisal period. Recommend staff additions, promotions, salary increases, and develop the shift schedule

  • Develop and manage a cost effective department budget

  • Proactively anticipate, manage and constructively resolve conflicts and disagreements; identify ways conflict can lead to positive change; and take appropriate action to address conflicts

Required Skills

  • Significant transaction experience and a demonstrated ability to lead complex structured capital investments in the U.S. energy, power and renewable energy sectors

  • Significant expertise in developing financing models and executing transactions for the solar rooftop or distributed generation industry

  • Strong understanding of energy efficiency projects and ability to lead credit investment decisions

  • Proven ability to make capital investment recommendations to C-level management and board members

  • Established track record of negotiating with reputable counterparties for structured project finance transactions in the U.S. energy industry

  • Detail-oriented and organized with ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks and anticipate needs

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills. Ability to handle significant work load and fast paced environment with multiple projects, timelines and due dates

  • Excellent research and superior analytic skills, including statistical and quantitative analysis and the use of spreadsheets and databases to develop past and future financial trends

  • Ability to analyze financial, marketing and operational data and make recommendations to establish strategic benchmarks and goals

  • In-depth understanding of finance/valuation concepts and financial statements. Ability to teach and lead analysts to develop a financial model from scratch, or to modify an existing one for a new project

  • Strong understanding of the intricacies of various debt and equity financing structures available to project developers

  • Ability to proactively address concerns or issues and work independently

  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills. Highly competent writing skills with ability to summarize complicated matters for a variety of audiences

  • Capable of handling highly confidential information discretely and responsibly.

  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization; capable of integrating complex interactions among all business units within NYPA

  • Self-motivated and capable of independent decision-making and able to take in information, make decisions and provide guidance and feedback to others regarding next steps

  • Understanding of utility regulations, Public Service Commission (PSC) policies and rulings, and FERC policy preferred

  • Ability to quickly pick-up on complex technical issues as well as political and interpersonal issues.

  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and governmental regulations and requirements is preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to delegate tasks and work in teams

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  • Knowledge of resource planning modeling and concepts preferred

  • Ability to ensure the promptness of departmental deliverables and ensure that financial models are kept current and data is sufficiently analyzed prior to report distribution

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting or a business relative field.

  • MBA or a Graduate Degree in Finance or another business relative field is preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years of finance experience with a strong background in financial structuring and developing financial models.

  • Minimum of 8 years of project finance investment execution experience, either as an advisor or as an investor

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the solar rooftop or distributed generation industry.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience generating financial and economic analysis.

  • Minimum of 3 years of management/supervisory experience or team lead experience.

  • Energy /utility industry experience is preferred
