The Director AGILe Lab (Advanced Power Systems) is responsible for designing, leading and executing the Advanced Power Systems business strategy and maintaining the unit’s profitability. The incumbent has the technical expertise and the credibility to obtain grants, a strong business acumen with the ability to operate under a stand-alone profit and loss (P&L), and the strategic and leadership skills to build the AGILe business model. The Director champions NYPA mission to deliver value to the ratepayers of the State of New York; believes that collaboration is the best and most cost effective way to address shared challenges; understands the tight linkage and interplay between technical and market solutions.
The Director AGILe Lab (Advanced Power Systems) is accountable to the New York Power Authority (NYPA) for the successful execution of his/her responsibilities in furtherance of NYPA’s policies.
The Director AGILe Lab (Advanced Power Systems) is responsible for performing specific tasks identified in Business Unit Policies and Procedures that support the company's policies.
Understand, communicate, execute tasks (e.g. provide input, review, coordinate, etc.), and/or implement specific elements of the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA’s) Asset Management System as defined in Business Unit Policies and Procedures established to support NYPA’s Asset Management Policy. Provide leadership, motivation and collaboration which are critical for successful asset management.
Design, implement, and manage Advanced Power Systems strategy, business plan and interdisciplinary team.
Hire, manage and supervise staff in expanding the Advanced Power Systems lab and execute the lab’s objectives.
Define and lead both collaborations and business relationships with utilities, vendors, agencies, and others to execute the mission of the lab. Manage strategic relationships the New York Independent System Operator, investor-owned utilities, and national utility industry associations (e.g., EPRI).
Work closely with New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) staff to monitor technical developments, coordinate strategy, and ensure successful implementation of relevant policies.
Negotiate major agreements with state and federal agencies, contractors, project developers and other stakeholders required for the successful advancement of Advanced Power Systems.
Work with team to design schedules of annual, quarterly, and monthly goals and objectives and manage process of holding managers and staff accountable for them.
Provide oversight and direction of the preparation of business plans and expenditure requests for executive management and Trustee approval.
Supervise the preparation of the yearly operating budget for lab, and oversee ongoing budget management process.
Ensure development and training of lab staff to optimize their talents and contributions.
Represent NYPA on select task forces, committees and boards.

Maintains a work environment and motivates staff to act with a focus on the future, is adaptable, overcomes resistance to change. Proven track record in recruiting and building a team and creating a performance culture.
Demonstrated ability to obtain research grants.
Ability to incubate new ventures and develop to full maturity.
Education, Experience and Certifications
PhD in Engineering, electric engineering preferred.
10 years of applicable experience.
Substantial body of published research related to integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER).
Demonstrated experience in obtaining research grants.
Professional leadership experience in two or more domains (academic, utility, regulatory, industry vendor).
Track record as a principal investigator or research lead in an academic environment or head of a research and development industry.
Preferred experience serving on standards committees or holding patents.
Position is based in New York State in the Albany area and requires approximately 25% travel, primarily in NY State.
Valid NY State driver’s license, maintained throughout employment.
