New York Power Authority Accountant in White Plains, New York
An Accountant performs professional accounting work at NYPA as assigned relating to the compilation, treatment, and analysis of financial data. The Accountant maintains accounting records and prepares financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and provisions of bond resolutions to maintain accountability for assets. Independently works on complex accounting activities including financial statement preparation and preparation of more difficult journal entries and account analyses. Responsible for analysis of data presented in financials on a monthly basis.
Compiles data for and prepares regularly scheduled and special accounting reports, analyses, and statements. Prepares schedules of a complex nature including revenue variances, transmission revenues, wheeling liability reconciliation, and various other reports.
Responsible for several monthly schedules and analyses which are included in the Board of Trustees reports.
Prepares complex journal entries and verifies/determines the accuracy of accounting. Posts all monthly closing entries and accruals by the third working day of the month.
Ensures accurate coding of vouchers and journals in areas of responsibility.
Interfaces with personnel from other departments regarding the coordination of accounting issues on a regular basis.
Cooperates with auditors of public accounting firm retained to audit accounting procedures and records, with emphasis on revenue variances, fluctuations, and cost allocations.
Participates in special studies/projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires a developed understanding of accounting principles and their practical application.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Knowledge of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Uniform System of Accounts.
Should have good knowledge of computerized accounting systems, as well as a good understanding of PC software and systems.
Knowledge and a firm understanding of internal controls and how they impact the integrity and accuracy of accounting records and financial reports.
Strong researching ability and analytic skills.
Excellent oral and written skills are required for dealing with internal and external customers and accounting firms.
Ability to analyze and initiate change to allow for more efficient processes.
Ability to organize and coordinate the assigned workload in order to meet strict monthly deadlines.
Strong negotiating skills and diplomacy in obtaining deliverables from other departments/facilities.
Ability to assist and coordinate the work of Accountants and Accounting Assistants as needed.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in multiple disciplines of Accounting (Financial Reporting/ Internal Controls) is required.
Minimum of 3 years of experience within a large corporate or government environment is preferred.
