Brief Posting Description

As a member of the Long Term Financial Forecast team, the position is responsible for the preparation, maintenance, analysis and presentation of the long-term financial forecasts for strategic purposes. Analyses focus on impacts to member rates and Board stipulated financial goals. Work closely with Tri-State's Resource Planning, Accounting, Corporate Finance, and Senior Management to perform scenario analysis to support strategic decision making.

The job grade for this position is: NB21.

Job Requirements


  • Foster a transparent and communicative teamwork environment.

  • Prepare, maintain and analyze annual revisions of the base long-term financial forecast utilizing Utilities International UIPlanner financial planning model, including coordination of data collection and data analysis.

  • Responsible for assuring accuracy and timely completion of long-term financial forecasts and financial plans, reports and other documents, and the accuracy and adequacy of computer models.

  • Prepare and analyze long-term financial forecast scenarios, and provide data, in support of our Integrated Resource Plan, lender and rating agency requests, senior management strategic initiatives, Board requests and other areas as required.

  • Maintain detailed records, assumptions and source documents in support of all long-term financial forecasts.

  • Maintain general model procedures and detailed documentation on scenario development process for each forecast created.

  • Work with consultants to develop and refine financial forecasting computer models.

  • Assist with developing and preparing presentations and reports for senior management and members of the Board of Directors.

  • Assist in the review of the annual Operations and Maintenance and Capital budgets.

  • Assist with representing Tri-State, as requested, on various committees regarding financial forecasting and other areas.

  • Prepare reports and complete special projects as assigned.

  • Adhere to and demonstrate compliance with appropriate electric utility industry regulatory requirements. Attain knowledge and remain knowledgeable of development in regulations, laws, standards and best practices applicable to the functional area including, but not limited to, Standards of Conduct, Environmental, Employment Law, NERC Reliability Standards and Safety. Must be familiar with, and comply with, all aspects of Corporate Policy C-54, Compliance.

Education and Training:

  • Degree in finance, accounting, economics, engineering or related discipline; or equivalent relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

  • Thorough understanding of financial statements and their interrelated nature.

  • Experience with financial forecast modeling.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

  • Ability to analyze complex, technical data and prepare concise, accurate reports.

  • Must be organized and possess exceptional attention to detail and analysis skills, yet understand and articulate the big picture.

  • Ability to plan and carry out work independently; setting priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Advanced computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.


  • Five (5) years of progressive related experience to include four (4) years in financial forecasting, accounting, finance, economics, or power utility resource planning.


  • Willingness to travel as needed.

  • Flexibility to work overtime if and as required.

  • Must be able to demonstrate that he/she can perform all of the essential functions of the position.


  • Utilities industry knowledge highly desired.

  • Knowledge of Tri-States generation and transmission systems desired.

  • Knowledge of Utilities International UIPlanner financial planning model desired.

Work involves complying with guidelines which consist of engineering, economic, and financial principles and practices, company policies, programs and procedures, government regulations, commercial and contractual alternatives and agreements.

  • Work Environment : While performing the duties of this position, the employee will work in an office environment indoors and will occasionally travel outdoors to multiple locations dependent on work.
