About T&D:

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position overview:

The Engineering position will support the Grid Controls team within the Integrated Innovation and Modernization organization. The primary function of the position is to demonstrate and pilot new technologies related to the interconnection, operation, control, and optimization of distributed energy resources. The Engineer’s responsibilities will include but not limited to conducting power systems studies, conducting hardware/software in-the-loop evaluation of control and optimization systems, and performing field demonstrations of control and optimization systems.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Support complex laboratory and field demo projects

  • Develop and validate power distribution system models

  • Perform hardware/software-in-the loop controller evaluation

  • Perform power system studies which may include load flow, dynamics, short circuit, and electromagnetic transient simulations

  • Document results of lab and field demonstrations

  • Support and maintain a safe lab environment

  • Create and maintain a safety conscious work environment

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned


Minimum qualifications

  • 8 years of power systems engineering experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering

  • Experience with power system simulations (e.g., load flow, short circuit analysis, dynamic analysis, etc.)

  • Experience with industrial and IoT communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, 61850, and IEEE 2030.5.)

Desired qualifications

  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Demonstrated experience with power system simulation tools, such as CYME, Power Factory, GridLab-D, or Simulink/Sim Power Systems

  • Demonstrated experience with computer programming/scripting languages: C#, Java, Python, VBA, etc.

  • Familiarity with hardware/software-in-the loop testing

  • Demonstrated knowledge of planning, analyzing, designing, evaluating, implementing, and satisfying project requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing and presenting technical and business information in formal and informal settings.

  • Must demonstrate strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.


  • Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
