In this position, the Safety Consultant will be a member of the Corporate Safety and Health Department with responsibilities to the assigned sites employees (salary, hourly, union and labor trades) to prevent injury and proactively target activities that may present hazards in the work place.


  • The selected candidate will work with other stakeholders to develop training, programs and communications that will move the organization into a more preventative mind set towards safety.

  • You will interface with company, contracted and governmental organizations to research, investigate or plan for safety related events.

  • You will be the sites Subject Matter Expert on safety and will be considered the champion for injury prevention.

  • You will assist with Personal Protective Equipment evaluations, Job Hazard Analysis, Job Safety Observations and the medical monitoring program, HSE compliance and auditing programs for the site.

  • You will conduct contractor safety orientations as needed per the site procedure to support outages.

  • You will be the primary representative from the site for any federal or state OSHA investigations/inspections. The position also requires integration into the sites Incident Command System in the safety officer role. Local incident investigations as well as participation in Root Cause Analysis teams and problem solving activities are all duties of this position.

  • They will be a member of any safety action teams for the sites as well as have extensive interaction with union leadership and union safety representatives.

  • Basic knowledge of industrial hygiene principles is also a plus – ie: noise monitoring and understanding of gas detection devices.

  • You need to be safety minded at all times and look to make continuous improvement efforts for safety performance of the personnel that work on the sites.


  • Bachelor’s degree in the applicable field of study. Less than a Bachelor’s degree may be acceptable if accompanied by extensive Company experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.

  • 3+ years of experience with safety program management


The Corporate & Field Safety Job Family is utilized throughout the Company. Including, but not limited to Corporate Safety and Health, Distribution Operations, and Energy Generation. Promotes a positive health and safety culture in the workplace. Ensures that supervisors and employees comply with safety legislation and that safety policies and practices are adopted and adhered to. Assist in planning, implementing, monitoring and reviewing protective and preventative safety measures. Works in partnership with employees, supervisors and union leaders to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents, and injuries.

Nature of Work

The essence of the work that is performed by the Safety Job Family is a wide variety of safety functions, at times involving very specific technical disciplines.

At the lowest level in this job family, the work performed may tend to be of a routine and less complex nature where the work responsibilities can be proficiently performed after a relatively short training period.

At the highest levels in this job family the work performed will tend to be of a complex nature involving knowledge of various functional/specialized disciplines where the work responsibilities can only be proficiently performed after a relatively long training / experience-related time period and may require an advanced degree. The work environment often includes dealing with risk and limiting exposure.

Leadership, management, facilitation and interaction with senior management will be markedly increased at the mid - highest levels of this job family while the need for direction and supervision will be markedly decreased. While problem solving and analysis will likely be required at all levels, recommendation and implementation becomes the norm at the highest levels and will often have a major bearing on the company’s business. In addition, skills such as the ability to think on your feet, composure under fire and effective communication across all levels of the organization and with outside customers/clients become more finely honed at the higher levels.

Essential Functions:

May compile OSHA mandated accident and incident information for inclusion in various management reports. May maintain OSHA logs in compliance with Federal regulations. General filing associated with the ongoing maintenance of safety & compliance records. Completes and distributes monthly accident reports in conjunction with the corporate-wide Safety Department to provide timely and accurate safety statistics required under various company policies. May respond to vendor, customer, and government agency requests for insurance certificates to document insurance levels as they relate to various customer requirements. Completes various quality surveys submitted by company customers to verify Company is continuing to meet quality standards as required. Maintains files and handles the Company’s processes to ensure operations of facilities within various state and federal regulations. Assists with or manages the safety eyewear program to ensure employees assigned to facilities requiring protective eyewear can obtain such eyewear, and the eyewear meets their prescription needs and requirements for designated safety eyewear. Must be able to maintain high level of confidentiality. Regular attendance is expected.

Hours and Travel:

This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week. Time will be spent in the office, headquarters or specific field locations. This position may require the ability to travel between field locations. This position may include nights and weekend/holiday timeframes.
