Summary

The James H Campbell Generating Complex is located in West Olive, Michigan located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan between the cities of Holland and Grand Haven. The Campbell complex helps Consumers Energy meet the energy needs of its more than 1.8 million electric customers. The Chemistry, Environmental, and Results Department is responsible for providing chemistry and technical expertise to support the operation of three large electric generating units that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing an important commodity/service. The department also supports environmental and regulatory compliance with an emphasis in water quality.

The Fuel Handling Supervisor II directs a team of OM&C employees in safe operation of power plant equipment and maintenance of equipment integrity; investigate and identify equipment/system deficiencies, train, develop, appraise, coach and communication with OM&C employees Individuals will have thorough familiarity. with scheduling and work process flows; be capable of performing production and outage leadership roles. Work may involve multiple shifts and locations involving unusual hours to support unusual events.

This position will be located at JHC Fuel Handling in West Olive.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Fuel Handling Supervisor will be responsible for:

  • Direct the operation of fuel handling and landfill equipment and maintaining equipment integrity

  • Coordinate with CSX with coal train deliveries

  • Direct the activities of the coal supply operators to assure safe, efficient operations

  • Assure compliance with safety and environmental procedures and policies

  • Administer switching and tagging procedure

  • Investigate and identify equipment/system deficiencies and recommend corrective actions

  • Coordinate equipment repair activities

  • Manage operator schedules

  • Perform on-call duties

  • Work with union leadership on matters involving the Working Agreement

  • Train employees in Fuel Handling

  • Maintain conformance to Company policies and standards

  • Compliance with operating procedures and documentation

  • Coordinate the switching of train cars with our on-site train car repair facility

  • Work closely with the plant to ensure a consistent quality fuel to all the bunkers

  • Provide technical oversight of maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, service, and testing of the Spray Dry Absorber (SDA) system

  • Oversight of the SDA system, which includes the Byproduct, Recycle Ash, Lime Slaking, Atomizer, Byproduct Waste, Water and Sump systems

    Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the planning, organization, coordination, evaluation and supervision of the operation of the Fuel Handling Department

  • Recommends proposed changes and enhancements to systems and facilities operation; responds to complaints and requests for information; prepares and maintains reports of completed work orders and the status of jobs in progress

  • Inspects job sites to check on work progress, assure satisfactory completion and plans new assignments; prepares requisitions for operations and maintenance supplies, equipment and materials and supervises special projects as required

  • Conducts regular safety meetings; investigates and completes necessary incident reports and accident reports; maintains records and prepares and submits required reports for appropriate agencies

  • Implement preventative maintenance programs

  • Participates in the day-to-day activities of Fuel Handling area

    Requirements/ Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required

  • Requires at least 1-2 years of Fuel Handling Supervisor, Maintenance Supervisor, Production Supervisor or equivalent experience

  • The Fuel Handling Supervisor II requires technical knowledge in power plant operation gained either through a technical field of study and/or through related work experience. Also requires demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices and procedures; knowledge of power plant operations; demonstrated leadership capabilities including the capacity to lead change efforts in a competitive business environment

    Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in a Power House Coal Handling facility that receives coal by rail

  • Working knowledge of plant systems and equipment; heavy equipment/railroad experience

  • Command and control skills

  • Supervisory experience with power plant operations and fuel handling experience

  • An understanding of the working agreement, conflict resolution and safety and health regulations

  • SAP experience

  • Must be willing to work night shift and weekends

  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices and procedures; the aptitude to learn plant operations; demonstrated leadership capabilities including the capacity to lead change efforts in a competitive business environment

    Hours and Travel

    This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent in the office or fuel handing area. Individual needs to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with equipment related issues and could be given very short notice to do so. Individual must be willing to participate in the ‘on call’ rotation. This position supports site operations which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime or equipment troubleshooting. The position requires committee work with Peer assignments. Individual must have a valid driver’s license.
