Role Description

The New England Senior Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting the New England Environmental Sustainability Director to drive achievement of National Grid’s environmental sustainability goals across the US business, with a specific focus on New England.

This role is important for ensuring the New England (NE) business unit is positioned to deliver on these goals by –

1) maintaining up-to-date internal and external greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, reporting, and compliance, in alignment with our corporate Responsible Business Charter and various external mandatory and voluntary commitments

2) collaborating with team members and stakeholders across the New England business to update and embed environmental commitments and ambitions into business operations, plans, and governance structures

3) operating efficiently through supporting development of in-house tools and projects

4) sharing industry best practices through engagement with peer organizations

Key Accountabilities

  1. Environmental Sustainability Performance Management

a. Responsible for calculating and distributing NE performance reporting updates on GHG emissions reductions performance compared to plans

b. Partner with key stakeholders to support the management of the GHG inventory spreadsheets and databases for the NE business by collecting and assessing data from across the business and calculating business-specific emissions for scopes 1, 2, and 3

c. Contribute to GHG reporting, accounting methodology documentation and testing as part of annual Responsible Business Report data verification and publication

d. Support external regulatory, mandatory and voluntary GHG reporting and compliance efforts (including EPA, MA DEP, CDP and others) through data calculations and summaries

e. Support GHG components of Massachusetts Electric and Gas rate case filings

f. Monitor and contribute to internal and external GHG accounting / reporting standards and trends

  1. Emissions Reductions Glidepaths

a. Manage the NE business 2050 emissions glidepath in coordination with Environmental Sustainability team and other key departments, including Strategy and Transformation

b. Ensure alignment of the emissions reductions glidepaths with other long-term roadmaps and strategic plans across the business

  1. Sustainability Program & Project Management

a. Support in-house sustainability programs and data systems, which may include emissions calculation and reporting tools, maintaining file sharing platforms

b. Support management of summer interns and special project groups

  1. Peer Engagement and Best Practice Development

a. Support engagement with external trade associations and coalitions by participating in webinars and events, engaging with colleagues at peer utilities, completing surveys and benchmarks, and sharing learnings with internal team

Qualifications

•Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, business, sustainability, or a related field

•Minimum 2 years professional experience with quantitative metrics, calculations, and data management tools

•Ability to effectively simplify and communicate complex concepts

•Experience working collaboratively as part of a team and managing multiple stakeholders

•Ability to prioritize, plan, and coordinate competing priorities

•Ability to work effectively in a hybrid virtual/in-person working environment

•Excellent verbal and written communication skills

•Preferred: experience with GHG Protocol and industry-standard GHG reporting forums

Salary

$99,000 - $116,000 a year

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
