National Grid’s Customer Innovation & Development team champions clean energy pilot projects, proofs of concept, product innovations, product development, and other new initiatives in order to improve the customer experience. This requisition is for a Senior/Lead Project Manager for Complex Demonstration Projects in the Innovation Group.



_About the Position:_

This role will be responsible for managing complex project development, construction, and commissioning for innovative energy demonstration projects across any of the National Grid US jurisdictions (MA, NY and RI). Projects may include distributed generation (such as solar), energy storage, energy efficiency, demand response, and innovative distribution system upgrades. This position will be responsible for tasks such as: creation of RFP’s, evaluation of bids, negotiating contracts, design engineering review, project and program management, and collaborating with numerous departments across the company. This role includes supporting regulatory filing development (such as rate cases that identify new projects and project financial recovery reporting). This role may include developing or delivering testimony before energy regulatory commissions (such as the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities). (80%)

This position is also responsible for identifying and developing ideas for new innovative energy demonstration projects with the larger Innovation Group team (20%).




_Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):_

  • Managing the development, construction and commissioning of multiple simultaneous energy demonstration projects.

  • Negotiating contracts. Managing design, construction, and O&M contractors. Reviewing and approving invoices, tracking project budgets, and financial reporting.

  • Conducting site visits when necessary for safety and quality inspections, installation verification, and contractor oversight.

  • Ensuring National Grid’s safety culture is strictly followed in all project activities.

  • Collaborating with internal and external parties to share lessons learned.

  • Managing regulatory filings and reporting associated with demonstration projects.

  • Analysing the potential of distributed energy resources to improve efficient operation of the electric transmission and distribution systems through demonstration projects.

  • Maintain a solid understanding of the business by staying abreast of industry trends. Learning and sharing best practices.

  • Participating in National Grid clean energy outreach events and customer education initiatives for renewable resources.

  • Working collaboratively with others, identifying, vetting, and developing new ideas for energy demonstration projects.

_Knowledge & Experience Required:_

  • Bachelors’ degree in Engineering /required/; advanced Degree preferred

  • 5 years of experience in complex project management /required, /including management of contractors

  • Formal project management training /required/; certificate preferred.

  • Experience in the development, construction and implementation of energy projects, with a particular emphasis on clean energy generation, energy storage, energy efficiency and demand response.

  • Experience with drafting RFPs, selecting contractors and negotiating contracts.

  • Familiarity with clean energy project industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes.

  • Familiarity with the utility business model, wholesale and retail markets for energy, capacity, and renewable energy certificates preferred.

  • Experience working independently on multiple simultaneous initiatives, including customer facing initiatives.

  • Strong leadership and team building skills; ability to react quickly to the changing market conditions in a highly complex and dynamic marketplace.

  • Good communication (both written and verbal), presentation and interpersonal skills.

  • Remarkable commitment to customer satisfaction.

  • Strong computer skills including the following: IE, Adobe, Outlook and Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).

  • Valid driver's license with safe driving record.

  • Willingness to work irregular hours or travel for occasional storm related assignments.
