National Grid is hiring a Principal Transmission Line Engineer – Successful candidate can be located in either our Waltham, MA, Boston, MA, or our Brooklyn, NY office.
Job Purpose
National Grid Ventures (NGV) is looking for a knowledgeable, curious, and driven Principal Transmission Line Engineer to join our Transmission Development and Asset Development Team. This individual will support all elements of overhead transmission lines. This includes high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) projects. The candidate will interface with cable suppliers, engineering, and permitting consultants, key project stakeholders to lead development and design. They will provide guidance, expertise, and decision-making capabilities to management. This role will provide support to key initiatives driving NGV’s growth and partnerships throughout the US.
Key Accountabilities
• Perform, lead, or facilitate engineering and transmission design.
• Conduct field inspections, determine cost effective solutions, and develop comprehensive engineering reports based on applicable design codes, engineering procedures, and sound safety practices
• Conduct engineering studies, analysis, and investigations in order to recommend corrective action or to prevent future problems
• Prepare project specifications, and develop procedures and technical documents
• Collaborate with diverse project teams to deliver projects on time, within scope, and on budget
• Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced engineers
• Investigate the adoption of new and innovative technologies
• Lead technical analysis as needed to support potential project partnerships.
• Document, present and report findings and justifications. Help prepare executive summaries or investment committee papers.
• Support or lead on siting, permitting and licensing requirements and/or hearings, if required.
• Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels when necessary.
• Oversee consultants, engineers or other subject matter experts as required to augment or complement the Asset Development team.
• Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across National Grid functions in the US and UK.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree preferably in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related technical fields.
• Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) preferred
• Completion of a Master’s Degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering school and/or holder of a Registered Professional Engineering License preferred
• Significant experience in transmission line engineering, preferably in high voltage (345kV or 765kV)
• Experience designing/engineering in multiple ISO and RTO territories.
• Experience with transmission design software including: PLS CADD, PLS POLE, and MFAD
• Broad knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, current design codes, industry policies, regulations and market fundamentals are essential.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex engineering into business insight & articulate the impact of results.
• Strong track record of relevant professional experience in projects, including developing business cases, optioneering, permitting, estimating and work structure planning.
• Excellent communication skills with proven ability to persuade, challenge and build credibility based on personally derived recommendations.
• Computational literacy including handling large data sets is mandatory.
• Fundamental understanding of the components of HVAC and HVDC transmission lines and assets including key risks and opportunities is required.
• Ability to develop tools and processes to facilitate best practice & knowledge sharing.

Salary
New England MA $162,000 - $190,000 a year
Downstate NY $173,000 - $203,000 a year
This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.
