About the Graduate Development Program

National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) (https://careers.nationalgridus.com/graduate-development-program) is an in-depth training and development program for high achieving recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates are the future of National Grid. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, Graduates begin working in their hired position and take part ongoing development activities through your first year including monthly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Capstone Project at the completion of your first year with National Grid.

National Grid is aiming for an in-person GDP experience for Summer 2022. However, we will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and will shift to a virtual program if necessary, in order to honor our commitment to our young talent pipeline.

Information Technology Graduate Rotations

IT & Digital seeks to attract and develop high potential recruits, to enable the clean energy transition for all, deliver for our customers efficiently and ensure we maintain resilient, secure and compliant technology solutions. Our student programs help you develop technical and leadership skills and build core competencies that will shape the future of how National Grid leverages technology. This position gives you the opportunity to participate in our IT Graduate Development Rotational Program, an 18-month experience consisting of three 6-month rotations in varying IT departments. Your first rotation will be in the role outlined below and you will return to this role following two broadening 6-month rotations where your knowledge of IT at National Grid will be expanded.

Job Purpose

Platform engineering within National Grid IT (CTO Group) provides core software engineering and agile-at-scale software delivery for different business units. The platform engineering towers are CRM & Digital, data engineering, integration engineering and software quality engineering. The graduate engineer for platform engineering will essentially be an entry level position in the core platform engineering team of National Grid and will follow a structured training programme rotating between the different engineering towers within the platform engineering team. The graduate engineers will have an opportunity to gain real time industry experience in the utilities sector working on world class digital transformation projects and getting their hands-on experience in cutting edge technology stacks and software engineering, AI/ML, data engineering, industrial automation, integration technologies, latest software tools for testing, verification and validation. In addition, the graduate engineers will receive mentoring and career coaching from industry leading experts and technologists to shape their future. We operate an agile shop and therefore the graduate engineers will be exposed to agile ways of working, DevOps, DevSecOps, MLOps and receive appropriate training in different tools chains, cloud computing environments and methodologies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Adapt to a structured rotation programme designed by National Grid as part of the graduate scheme

  • Participate in software project sprints and contribute to design, development and testing of software systems and digital minimum viable products (MVP)

  • Complete all national Grid trainings and assessments as part of structured rotation plan for graduate engineers

  • Contribute to technical blogs, presentations, virtual discussions in weekly engineering review meetings and other technical forums.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited institution in software engineering, computer science, mathematics, data science, or a relevant numerate discipline

  • Graduated between May 2021 and June 2022

  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program May 31, 2022 or June 27, 2022

  • Valid US driver’s license

  • Proven leadership experience

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
