Senior Relay Technician or Relay Technician

Westar Energy is an electric utility serving approximately 685,000 customers in Kansas.

We are currently seeking candidates for one (1) Sr. Relay Technician, wage rate $47.15, or Relay Technician, wage rate $43.28.

The reporting location for this position will be at Westar’s Neosho Technical Operations Center located near Parsons, Kansas.

The candidates must supply their qualifications in the documentation submitted to be considered for the position.

Senior Relay Technician shall be Technicians who have demonstrated their leadership and ability to plan and direct the work of others.

They shall possess experience in the construction and maintenance of system protection and control of substations.

They shall have the ability to interpret and use the Company’s plans and specifications and have thorough knowledge of the Company’s safety rules and practices.

They shall have personal characteristics suitable for making contacts with customers and the public which are necessary in their line of duty.

Additional requirements shall include those listed under the Relay Technician minimum requirements.

Relay Technician shall be skilled workers having four (4) years training as a Relay Technician apprentice or trainee who possess the required knowledge, skill and physical ability to perform any work they may be called upon to do in connection with the installation, repair and maintenance of apparatus equipment and wiring used in system protection and control of substations and other equipment.

Provides technical support for other departments.

Minimum qualifications require a two (2) year college degree in electronics or the equivalent with a four year Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology degree preferred. They shall be qualified through knowledge and experience to assist other Relay Technicians or Senior Relay Technicians.

This is a highly technical position dealing with all types of power system control and protective relay schemes.

The successful candidate must possess skills in the following areas:

• Industrial controls

• Microprocessors

• Power systems

• Computer/digital instrumentation

• Local area networks and telecommunications

• Advanced math

• Interpersonal communications

The successful applicant is subject to call outs and will be required to live within 30 minutes driving time of Neosho Technical Operations near Parsons, KS.

The successful applicant must be willing and able to fulfill overtime demands which can be can be significant and inconvenient at times. The successful applicant must to be willing to fill this need to maintain reliable electric service to Westar’s customers.

Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
