The position is within the project delivery arm of the SPT business reporting directly to the SPT Construction Manager working for SP Energy Networks. The department is responsible for the construction of new builds, replacement and /or refurbishment of existing assets, or any other associated major transmission project. The SiteManager role is pivotal to the projects deliverables which you will be a major part of a multi-disciplined team responsible for the safe delivery of the project & the primary site contact.


  • On site ownership and leadership of the project reporting (and fully supporting) directly to the project Construction Manager. To provide technical support and advice, primarily in relation to electrical aspects of the construction stage for transmission projects, this will include sufficient knowledge and experience in the following areas:-
  • Steel /Aluminium Structure installation
  • Main plant installation eg: Manual /
  • Motorised Disconnectors, Earth Switches, Circuit Breakers, Post Insulators, Surge Arresters, Pantographs, Busbars and clamps. Grid Transformers, Earthing Transformers, Neutral Earth resistors, LVAC switchboards, Battery installations and Earthing both above and below ground including High Frequency Earthing.
  • Secondary Installations: LVAC / Multicore / Paired cable laying, glanding and terminating. Fibre Optic cable laying , installation and connection.
  • Protection and Controls systems
  • Mechanical / Electrical Interlocking
  • Testing and commissioning of all of the above to ensure operationally fit for purpose prior to energisation.

  • Responsibility to proactively monitor and manage and support coordination of the contractor’s programmes in line with the overall project programme.

  • Responsible for safe implementation of the role of the Principal Contractor in line with CDM Regulations 2015 for SP Energy Networks. Site Manager is responsible for co-ordinating / implementation of safe systems of work of all on site activities & review of all pre-task planning and relevant documents.

  • Ensure compliance with all site environmental legislation, & monitor all agreed mitigation.

  • Ensure compliance with all quality standards and specifications with a particular focus on monitoring of the works using the contractor’s inspection and testing regime this will include control over all material and free issue equipment.

  • Minimise variations, keep accurate daily records & reports.

  • Ability to proactively liaise & interface with SPEN transmission operational staff Protection Engineers and SAP understand & implement safety from the system within the confines of Transmission and Distribution Safety Rules and associated SPEN procedures.

  • Coordinate and manage all As Built information generated by the contractor where SPEN is the Principal designer.



  • Significant experience in managing transmission construction projects, expectations to be minimum 5 years within the industry in a similar role but not a prerequisite.

  • Ability to understand electrical design drawings, circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams and including all inspection and testing.

  • Contract management including variations and claims.

  • Awareness of FIDIC, NEC, conditions of contract.

  • Ability to implement quality assurance and environmental processes in line with legal requirements and company processes.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety legislation

  • PC knowledge of Microsoft applications. Eg: Word, Excel, Power Point and Microsoft project

  • Understanding and Knowledge of specification, design, maintenance, construction and commissioning of electrical substations.

  • Proven ability to lead and work in a team and contractors environment

  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills

Not a prerequisite but having further knowledge and understanding of: Installation and test of EHV Cabling and terminations, OHL; works – Tower erection etc.


  • Essential significant experience in managing construction projects in the power sector.

  • Essential and must have experience as a manager delivering the Principal Contractor role and managing multiple contractors.

  • Preferred BEng in Electrical Power Engineering

  • ONC / HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering or equivalent- minimum

  • Or SVQ Level 4 – Construction Management

  • Or on site experience (5 years minimum), in managing construction projects in the power sector

  • SP Energy Networks authorisations up to 400kV.

  • Proficient with IT & software packages, Microsoft office etc.

  • Current five days SMSTS or Safety Passport: CCNSG, Shea, etc

  • First Aid is essential

  • Salary min £34,195 per annum
