POSITION: Sr Interconnection Project Engineer
DEPARTMENT: Interconnection, Grid Integration Group
REPORTS TO: Manager, Director of Interconnection
LOCATION: Remote, San Francisco CA, Long Beach CA, Salt Lake City UT, Louisville CO, New York, NY, or Richmond, VA
The Grid Integration group is responsible for siting and interconnecting the AES Clean Energy portfolio to transmission and distribution systems across the United States. The group consists of a Transmission Strategy team, Interconnection team, High Voltage Engineering team, and a Generation Modelling team.
The primary responsibilities of this role are: strategic analysis of the interconnection procedures and queue to steer greenfield project siting, and to then prepare and manage interconnection requests through to an Interconnection Agreement with the most favorable terms possible. The Sr. Interconnection Project Engineer (DG) supports the DG Manager, Interconnection (DG Manager) on progressing assigned projects through the interconnection process and working multi-functionally with the broader Development Team and other Domain Experts (SMEs) to optimize the position throughout the development lifecycle.
The preferred candidate has experience in: the preparation and review of interconnection requests; review and management of interconnection studies; review and management of PSCAD, CYME, ASPEN, PSS/E and/or PSLF models; and participating in the management of solar and storage, and wind projects through the generator interconnection processes including negotiation and execution of Generator Interconnection Agreements. Additional responsibilities include supervising the progress of required system upgrades and identifying creative mitigation solutions when needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
The Sr. Interconnection Project Engineer (DG) will support all interconnection activities through the full life cycle of development and construction of projects. The position will support the DG Manager and other internal customers leading to the successful execution of both new and acquired projects across the United States. Some travel required (15-20%).
Support greenfield development: review transmission distribution system analysis, own the identification of interconnection agencies and procedures, help lead preparation and filing interconnection requests including leading internal and external parties on preparation of technical materials, provide viability feedback to the DG Manager and other internal team members to support any financial and project approvals needed. Present and support new ideas and opportunities for new strategic endeavors.
Interconnection study process: lead and support the review and analysis of utility study report including scope of work, cost, and schedule; lead tracking and reporting of results throughout the study process; translating results for non-technical teams; lead negotiation and execution of Generation Interconnection Agreements and Engineering and Procurement (E&P) agreements
Implementation of portfolio projects: lead assistance of internal groups to complete results required by Interconnecting Utility to construct interconnection facilities including integrating schedules of Interconnecting Utility into project construction schedule.
Support and lead project due diligence efforts, identify existing and potential red flags for project acquisitions and existing pipeline projects.
Desired Skills and Expertise:
Familiarity with reviewing interconnection studies and power flow models. Experience running study models a plus.
Ability to analyze power flow and system impact studies for interconnection of utility scale solar, wind, and storage generating facilities.
Knowledge of System Impact Studies (SIS) and other interconnection studies and procedures for interconnection renewable energy generating facilities and projects acquired through competive bidding and/or M&A
Understanding of electrical diagrams, preliminary site plans, and preparation of interconnection request packages for submittal.
Awareness of distribution, subtransmission, and transmission systems and how they operate in the US.
Knowledge of Generator Interconnection Procedures across the US.
Knowledge of utility regulation, public utility investigative dockets, driven bid rules/tariffs for renewable energy acquisition, and performance requirements for power purchase agreements.
Leadership skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals in a professional manner
Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities
Strong interpersonal skills and strong written, oral, and presentation skills including clear, comprehensive, and succinct communications for a wide variety of audiences
Minimum Qualifications:
BS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
5+ years work history in renewable or traditional energy development, utility generation development, or distribution/transmission planning. Previous employment or experience working at an Electric Utility, or consultants providing services within those footprints is strongly preferred.
