Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Be a critical member of Agile team to design, build and support PPL’s Cloud Data Platform that meets performance, scalability, reliability, and security needs.

  2. Identifies, designs, and implements internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

  3. Creates and maintains optimal data pipeline architecture for extraction, transformation, and loading of data from various data sources – both internal and external.

  4. Assembles large, complex sets of data that meet non-functional and functional business requirements- Builds industrialized analytic datasets and delivery mechanisms that utilize the data pipeline to deliver actionable insights

  5. Identifies, designs, and implements internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

  6. Contributes to the architecture and design for scalable and efficient model deployments.

  7. Investigates data, data sources and performs data quality analysis.

  8. Works with stakeholders including the product, data and design teams to support their data infrastructure needs while assisting with data-related technical issues.

  9. Contribute to a positive culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence by identifying and implementing process improvements where appropriate.

  10. Collaborate with architects, business users, system analysts, developers, and ecosystem partners to bring innovative ideas from conception to launch at scale.

  11. Work in an iterative/Agile environment and be a strong team player.

  12. Adopt emerging technologies and launch products / services faster with rapid prototyping & iterative methods

  13. Proven ability to take prototypes to production, following engineering best practices.

  14. May be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.

Position Summary:

PPL’s Data & Analytics Office is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to be an integral part of the Digital Transformation. The Senior Data Engineer designs and implements cutting-edge technical data solutions that drive high business value as part of the Cloud Data Platform. The successful candidate is unafraid to challenge technical constraints and procedures to achieve an Agile design. As a Senior Data Engineer you will work closely with all team members to create a modular, scalable solution that addresses current needs, but will also serve as a foundation for future success. She / he will be critical in building the team’s engineering practices in test driven development, continuous integration, automated deployment and is a hands-on team member who actively coaches the team to solve complex problems. She / he will be responsible for the design, development, performance and support of the Cloud Platform components. The role will report to the Data Engineering Manager.

In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline.

  2. 5+ years of experience in data engineering or related field.

  3. In-depth knowledge of database structures/ data warehousing principles, and experience in SQL across different platforms including structured and unstructured data from various enterprise sources.

  4. Understand batch and real-time data integration patterns include ETL experience (Informatica, SSIS, Azure Data Factory etc), data replication, data streaming, virtualization, etc.

  5. Experience in writing and executing complex SQL’s.

  6. Proven technical skills in data modeling, data management, data pipelines, ETL/ELT and data retention concepts and practices.

  7. Extensive hands-on experience implementing data migration and data processing using Azure services:, Serverless Architecture, Azure Storage, Azure SQL DB/DW, Data Factory, Azure Stream Analytics, Synapse Analytics, HDInsight, Databricks, Cosmos DB, ML Studio, AI/ML, Azure Functions, ARM Templates, Azure DevOps, CI/CD etc.

  8. Extensive knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores and experience with building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.

  9. Experience in end to end data engineering solutions.

  10. Show a strong sense of ownership for their deliverables.

  11. Initiative and passion for finding solutions to ambiguous problems and ability to work in difficult situations and across organizational boundaries.

  12. Strong communication skills both written and verbal, with ability to communicate or convey the results to audience at all levels.

  13. Familiar with the latest technologies, trends, standards, products, and applicability.

  14. Ability to effectively adapt to rapid technological and business change while maintaining enthusiasm and displaying sound judgment.
