Risk Control is the independent risk monitoring and oversight function for the Southern Company Generation Fleet Operations and Trading organization and for the Southern Power Company Commercial Optimization and Trading organization. As a member of the Risk Control group, the Financial Analyst is responsible for performing ongoing derivatives-related accounting functions for the power and gas trading activities. These functions include ensuring proper hedge documentation is completed, performing necessary effectiveness testing, and creating and validating monthly journal entries. This position will also be responsible for the preparation and review of derivatives input for the 10Q and 10K. Derivatives accounting activities impact multiple subsidiaries and will require close communication with the accounting groups at each company. Additional duties will include monitoring and assessing the risks of the company’s asset optimization and trading activities and supporting risk policy and controls compliance.
This position is located in Birmingham, AL and reports to the Risk Manager.
JOB RESPONSIBILTIES
Evaluate derivative transactions to determine appropriate accounting treatment or the need for input from Accounting Research
Document derivative transactions in accordance with SFAS 133, ASC 815, and ASC 820, including documentation of normal purchases and normal sales
Ensure all necessary effectiveness testing and correlation analysis occurs in order to maintain hedge accounting treatment
Perform month-end derivative accounting functions
Prepare and review quarterly/annual inputs to 10Q and 10K filings
Document and perform control activities necessary to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley
Calculate and monitor credit exposure and take appropriate actions to notify management and traders of credit limitations and out of compliance situations.
Evaluate new product offerings and trade strategies to appropriately identify and measure risk and to determine appropriate accounting treatment
Prepare and review commodity contracts (natural gas & electricity) to ensure all risk components are identified and appropriately monitored
Provide oversight of trader checkout and confirmation processes to ensure completeness and proper documentation.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and develop implementation plans.
Assist in the development and maintenance of risk policies.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education Requirement
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, economics, or finance; CPA or candidate working toward CPA desired.
Experience Requirement
1 to 3 years of relevant experience preferred
Demonstrated ability to interpret and implement accounting rules
Experience developing, evaluating and/or implementing system controls, processes, and procedures
Experience preparing regulatory filings and balancing multiple deadlines
Experience preparing journals and financial statements desired
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with peers and management at various levels
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment
Strong analytical skills required, with the ability to quickly learn new concepts and skills
General knowledge of energy markets desired
Proficiency with standard analytical and business software such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Attention to detail, ability to balance multiple tasks, good organizational skills, and ability to learn quickly
Ability to understand/learn systems specific to Risk Control and how they interface and relate to one another
Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley Act desired
