JEA Environmental Scientist in United States

Under general supervision, gathers data, collects samples, researches and analyzes data to assess environmental issues or impacts at JEA facilities and projects to support JEA’s efforts to excel in environmental stewardship. Schedules, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of other employees, contractors and consultants. Job requires working knowledge of federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations, and methods, techniques and procedures used to develop approaches for mitigating emissions or environmental impacts, sufficient to perform a range of varied, complex technical activities. Procedures are established and a number of specific guidelines are available, requiring judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate methods, techniques and procedures to apply to specific cases. Solves routine or recurring problems and identifies and suggests solutions to more complex issues. Completed work is reviewed for technical soundness and compliance with established procedures, policies and requirements. Regular contact with people, both inside and outside the organization, is required to clarify and provide technical information, plan and coordinate work efforts and influence and persuade others to comply with environmental policies, procedures and regulations.

  • Schedules, assigns and reviews the work of other employees, contractors and consultants.
  • Conducts environmental reviews and audits to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
  • Assists in negotiating permit or compliance issues with regulators as well as those being regulated by JEA.
  • Gathers, researches and analyzes environmental data to assess proposed or effective regulatory language and subsequent potential impacts to JEA operations and activities.
  • Conducts required analyses to prepare or review routine monitoring reports to be submitted to regulators for compliance with permits, rules or regulations.
  • Evaluates environmental trends and interprets data to assess impacts of JEA operations on the environment.
  • Evaluates operational or construction activities, which may require compliance with regulatory requirements, to ensure that sound environmental practices are followed.
  • Operates and adjusts field sampling and testing equipment.
  • Assists in issuing of and obtaining required permits to authorize regulated activities.
  • Coordinates the response to water or wastewater line breaks and other environmental spill/call-out incidents in accordance with established JEA procedures.
  • Performs other job-related work as assigned.

_OPEN REQUIREMENTS_: Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Science, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science or a related field and two (2) years of professional environmental experience. -OR- Six (6) year combination of education, training and professional environmental experience which must include successful completion of twenty-four (24) semester hours of college level coursework in the Natural or Physical Sciences or related field.

May be required to operate a marine vessel/boat for specific assignments.

The salary range for this position is $57,928 - $72,758.40 annually. Total compensation is commensurate with education, licenses, certifications, skills, and experience.
