Summary

Spire is seeking a Director, Collective Bargaining preferred to be based in its St. Louis, Missouri location, however, open to Kansas City or Birmingham locations. This position will be responsible for developing and executing a long-term employee relations strategy and implementation plan to successfully negotiate the corporate and departmental business objectives with all labor unions across Spire.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and negotiate labor agreements, including preparation of background information, development of Company proposals, leading bargaining sessions, review of union proposals and development of counterproposals within approved total economic and operational budget

  • Assist in the development of the HR strategy to harmonize the total rewards package with the alignment of compensation, benefits and HR policies across the organization

  • Partner on communication campaigns to build credibility with employees, increase morale amongst employees, gain trust of managers and engage all employees around our corporate mission

  • Serve as a reliable and trusted consultant on a wide range of labor relations matters such as the interpretation and application of collective bargaining agreements; the processing of formal grievances and the arbitration of such grievances; communications with union leadership relating to other disputes and questions; responses to union information requests; discipline of bargaining unit members; and compliance with applicable labor laws

  • Interpret labor agreements, including providing advice to department supervision regarding contract provisions, holding informal discussions with union officers concerning potential issues and differences in the interpretation of specific provisions of the labor agreements, etc.

  • Advise about and manage the response to union organizing and manage the preparation for, and the response to, strikes, picketing and other job actions by unions

  • Prepare and present appropriate training for managers and supervisors on a variety of labor relations topics

  • All other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Collective Bargaining Team

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business discipline required

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • A minimum of 8 of years of collective bargaining experience

  • 2 years’ experience in people or project team leadership

  • Experience with labor strategy formulation and lead contract negotiation

  • Extensive experience in all areas of labor relations (i.e. contract negotiations and management, lead negotiator, NLRB activities, case evaluation, preparation for arbitrations, etc.)

  • Well-versed in dispute resolution and contract analysis with strong negotiation skills required

  • Knowledgeable of the theories, principles, practices of progressive labor relations, and all local, state and federal regulations as relates to labor relations including working knowledge and interpretation of the National Labor Relations Act

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with both internal peers, staff of acquired entities and third party service providers

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Normal Work Environment - Work is normally performed in a shared office environment

  • Hours 8am – 5pm Monday - Friday

  • Up to 50% travel required
