SUMMARY OF POSITION: Traffic Control Superintendent provides direction to the local management for standard day to day operations and can direct/perform routine manual and semi-skilled work in the traffic control industry. JOB TITLE: Traffic Control Superintendent

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Based upon the level of position, not all functions may apply)

  • Accountable for ensuring the safety of all employees, including conducting on-site JHA reliably as per company policy.

  • Proficient in all traffic control setups and the MUTCD standards.

  • Plan and develop maintenance programs, schedules, and timetables; assist in establishing and administering traffic maintenance policies and standards; communicate and direct implementation of changes in policies, standards, and regulations to subordinates.

  • Plans, organizes, and supervises all equipment and materials needed to set-up, take down, maintain traffic control, and handle traffic-related situations. Monitors condition of equipment and reports issues to supervisor.

  • Control and allocate available resources; prioritize projects based on greatest need and monitor budget to allow maximum utilization of resources.

  • Effectively trains and coaches subordinates

  • Communicates effectively with subordinates, peers, and supervisors.

  • Review existing operations; develop and make recommendations on improved methods and procedures for traffic maintenance activities.

  • Able to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (Based upon the level of position, not all functions may apply)

  • Firm knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies used in traffic operations related to construction work.

  • Experience supervising other employees

  • Basic knowledge of first aid and appropriate safety precautions.

  • Experience in managing operations budget, including review of profit and loss reports

  • Ability to work independently and in groups to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

  • Ability to repeatedly lift and carry heavy objects walk and stand for long periods and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.

  • Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.

  • Ability to professionally interact with supervisors, project supervisors, coworkers, public, subordinate employees, other contractors, project owners, and their agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Based upon the level of position, not all may apply)

  • Hold a High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Possess 5+ years’ traffic control work experience in a supervisor capacity that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.

  • Must possess and maintain current Traffic Control Technician, Flagger certification, and Traffic Control Supervisor certification.

  • A valid Driver’s License with a clean MVR is required per the company policy.

  • Ability to work flexible hours.


  • Regularly works near moving traffic and machines and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue, and effectively jump, sprint, or throw an object.

  • Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands), and multi-limb coordination.

  • The noise level is generally loud.

  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.

  • This position requires the ability to occasionally lift to 40 pounds.

  • Must be able for extended periods to perform any of the following: stand, walk, jog, climb, kneel, squat, bend at the waist, grasp, and hold various tools and objects with both hands.

    This position is subject to the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) drug & alcohol testing regulations as outlined in 49 CFR Part 382 and/or 49 CFR Part 199.
