The position is within the corporate Environmental Affairs Department of Southern Company Gas (GAS), supporting Virginia Natural Gas (VNG). Applicant must have the ability to provide senior level environmental support for existing and future system needs at VNG. Primary responsibilities will include performing environmental permitting reviews, regulatory and policy interpretation, and development of permitting and compliance strategies in support of VNG’s natural gas infrastructure.

Applicant must have the ability to support multiple projects with varying levels of environmental needs/requirements. Individual must maintain knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local environmental regulations and policies, have the ability to effectively interface with internal and external customers, regulatory agencies, and be able to assist in resolving complex environmental matters.

The position is located at VNG headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Job Overview:

Employees in this job are responsible for providing expert environmental support for new and existing natural gas infrastructure including due diligence, permitting, regulatory compliance, regulatory interpretation and development, and interface with federal, state, and local agencies. This position will serve as the sole environmental lead at VNG, requiring competency to work independently and ability to take initiative.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports the company's compliance with environmental requirements

  • Performs comprehensive environmental due diligence reviews

  • Assists with facility compliance audits

  • Conducts environmental licensing and permitting activities related natural gas pipelines, compressor stations, and related ancillary facilities

  • Supports environmental aspects of company operations such as, compliance, reporting, monitoring, stewardship/sustainability/social goals, and environmental permitting functions

  • Monitors and analyzes environmental policies and regulations that affect the company and its customers

  • Routinely interact with Federal, State, and Local regulators on behalf of the company

  • Provides the necessary support to staff to resolve environmental matters

  • Performs training to internal and external customers

  • Assists with company’s corporate waste program

  • Provides management and oversight of consultants including related contracts, purchase orders, and invoices

  • Conducts field surveys and site visits as needed

  • Application of Environmental Justice principles

  • Assist with company’s existing air permitting program

Required Education:


  • BA/BS in Biology, Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering (Environmental, Civil, or similar) or other natural science discipline


  • MS in Biology, Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering (Environmental, Civil, or similar) or other natural science discipline

Related Work Experience:


  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in environmental permitting, compliance, environmental liability management, and project management

  • Experience in wetland and waterbody delineation

  • Experience in Clean Water Act Section 404 permitting and the Endangered Species Act

  • Experience with Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) permitting


  • Permitting and compliance in linear and/or stand-alone construction activities

  • Experience with applicable air and waste regulations

  • Experience with Environmental Information Management Systems or other compliance solutions

  • Experience managing large complex projects with significant environmental implications

  • Experience and/or familiarity with environmental justice principles

  • VDEQ – Stormwater Management and Erosion & Sediment Control certification

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Travel requirements: This position may require travel on an occasional (5-20% travel) to regular (20-50% travel) basis. On occasion, trips will likely require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.

  • On-call duties: While not officially on-call, this position will require the ability to respond to urgent environmental issues when contacted during traditional and non-traditional work hours, as issues arise.

  • Physical demands: This position frequently requires prolonged standing or walking, ability to lift minimum 20 pounds

  • Work environment: This position will be located in an office environment and may be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions when working with field operations, conducting facility inspections, facilitating assessments, etc.
