Associate Engineer

Job Description

Job Summary

Associate Engineer provides technical expertise to solve problems, and leadership skills to provide oversight of work in Substation Operations, with moderate supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills in their field of study, and the ability to work with greater independence.

Essential Functions

  • Provides technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in Substation Operations.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Provides technical support and operational data to utility business partners

  • Working knowledge of company and industry codes, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures

Required Qualifications For Associate Engineer

  • Graduate from a four year ABET accredited program with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • 0-12 months of relevant job experience

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems

  • Good oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with customers, contractors, and various company operational and technical groups. Possess organizational and planning skills

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State Upon Hire

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Associate Engineer

  • Engineer in Training (EIT Certification) within 2 years of hire date

  • Desire to obtain a professional Engineering license within 8-years hire date

  • Master's degree in business or engineering

Engineer 1

Engineer 2

Engineer II provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence.

Essential Functions

All of the qualifications of an Engineer I plus the following:

• Knowledge of electric engineering including: 3-phase circuit theory, electronics theory, troubleshooting concepts, energy systems, hydraulics, thermodynamics, statics and dynamics, pneumatics, and material science.

• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems utilized by electric substation power equipment

• Has increased understanding of our Cascade Maintenance System.

• Specific knowledge of power equipment principles and testing concepts.

• Has increased ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.

• Ability to devise and apply specific test procedures related to electric substation power equipment.

• Has increased ability to apply basic electrical engineering principles to recommend sound substation engineering solutions.

• Ability to operate and accurately interpret results from complex electrical test and measurement equipment.

Required Qualifications For Engineer 2

  • 2 to 4 years of electric utility experience and a graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • Increased understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems

  • Good oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with customers, contractors, and various company operational and technical groups. Possess organizational and planning skills

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State Upon Hire

Engineer 3

Engineer III provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently.

Essential Functions

All of the qualifications of an Engineer II plus the following:

• Ability to plan, organize and complete complex project with minimal supervision

• Ability to effectively complete multiple projects concurrently

• Ability to effectively work independently or as a member of a team or as a leader

• Proficient in using the Cascade Maintenance System.

• Communication and motivation skills to lead technical personnel

• Proficient in reading, interpreting, and correcting various substation schematics and wiring diagrams.

• Has significant ability to use and improve upon existing Substation Power Equipment Engineering Standards

• Has the ability to work with customers or contractors on major projects and explain complex technical issues

Required Qualifications For Engineer 3

  • 4 to 9 years of electric utility experience and a graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • Proficient in engineering/technical theories and principles.

  • Proficient in basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems

  • Proficient oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in dealing with customers, contractors, and various company operational and technical groups. Possess organizational and planning skills

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State Upon Hire

Senior Engineer

Senior Engineers provide technical expertise to solve complex problems, and leadership skills to provide project management or oversight of work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for unreviewed work. Incumbents are expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

Essential Functions

All of the qualifications of an Engineer III plus the following:

• Specific knowledge of the NIPSCO system configuration and operation of the electric T&D facilities.

• Must be highly skilled and experienced in all facets of substation power equipment maintenance procedures

• Excellent working knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, thermodynamics, statics & dynamics, material science and chemistry

• Has the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and it's customers

• Knowledge of the NIPSCO safety policies/procedures, material and supply systems, and electric and material standards.

• In depth knowledge of electrical engineering and electric substation power equipment including the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, material sciences and chemistry.

• Skilled in the comprehensive ability to read, interpret, and correct various electric schematics and wiring diagrams

• Skilled in leading teams, projects and meetings with various stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.

Required Qualifications For Senior Engineer

  • 7+ years of electric utility experience and a graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • Skilled in engineering/technical theories and principles.

  • Skilled in basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations

  • Skilled in reading/interpreting drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems

  • Skilled with oral, written and interpersonal skills.

  • Skilled in dealing with customers, contractors, and various company operational and technical groups. Possess organizational and planning skills

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State Upon Hire

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Senior Engineer

  • Experience in the electric utility industry

  • Professional Engineer Licensure Upon Hire

  • PMP Certification Upon Hire

  • Skilled in principles of project management

The successful candidate will be considered for one of the five levels listed below based off of experience.

SALARY INFORMATION

Salary Range:

  • Associate Engineer: $67,900 - $101,900 USD Annual

  • Engineer 1: $67,900 - $101,900 USD Annual

  • Engineer 2: $79,800.00 - $119,600 USD Annual

  • Engineer 3: $93,800 - $140,700 USD Annual

  • Senior Engineer: $110,200 - $165,300 USD Annual

As a public utility, NiSource is required to provide continuous service to customers at all times. To ensure we fulfill that obligation, employees may be required to work outside their normal work hours and perform tasks outside of their normal responsibilities in support of emergency operations.

$67,900.00 - $165,300.00

*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience , as well as internal pay equity .
