AES Senior Director, Mountain West Origination in Utah

The Senior Director, Mountain West Origination is responsible for offtake agreements including PPAs, VPPAs, and Build-Transfer Agreements in the Mountain West region (CO, UT, NM, WY, MT, and ID). Key focus will be to build meaningful relationships with buyers of renewable energy to originate and negotiate offtake agreements in the region.

Reporting to the VP of Mountain West Origination, this position will work closely with the entire origination team as well as the commercial and development teams in the AES Clean Energy business. The position will enjoy extensive opportunity to support the company’s growth in delivering renewable energy solutions to its customers across the country.

While there is a preference for the position to be located in Salt Lake City, UT, there is potential for this position to be located at other AES offices or fully remote. A frequent amount of travel is expected (roughly 30%).

Main Responsibilities

  • Support the sourcing, negotiation, and execution of long-term power purchase agreements and/or strategic asset sales (e.g., build-transfer and develop-transfer agreements) with customers in the Mountain West region to facilitate the development of renewable generation and energy storage assets while meeting customers’ needs for sustainability and carbon-free goals.

  • Support Origination team’s external presence, representing the company to potential

customers (e.g., utilities and commercial & industrial offtakers).

  • Identify customer opportunities and lead the pricing, structuring, and negotiation of offtake agreements.

  • Lead all aspects of the RFP proposal response process.

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including Development, Project Finance, EPC, and Interconnection teams.

  • Prepare internal and external memos and presentations to key decision makers.

  • Keep abreast of renewable energy opportunities and national trends impacting the future of renewable development opportunities and their competitiveness as they relate to AES’s customers.

  • Support the development of uniform and consistent deal processes across the business.

Qualifications

  • At least ten (10) years of work experience at a leading IPP, renewable developer, or energy procurement group at a major utility or large corporate purchaser with significant experience structuring and negotiating complex agreements.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area required. MBA or another relevant advanced degree preferred.

  • Hands-on experience leading contractual analysis and proposal submissions.

  • Strong rolodex of potential customers across a national footprint. Relationships across the Mountain West region are of particular importance.

  • Highly effective communication skills.

  • Ability and desire to think creatively and execute on strategic plans.

  • Knowledge of energy markets, Including WECC and integrated markets across the US.

  • Understanding of renewable generation technology including wind, solar, and battery storage.

  • Familiarity with Salesforce or other CRM.
