We are currently seeking a talented individual for the position of Director of Tax or Manager of Tax. The position will be filled at the level appropriate to the candidate’s background and qualifications. The successful candidate for the Director of Tax will oversee the management and coordination of all tax accounting, analysis, reporting, tax research, planning, audits, reporting and compliance for the organization’s Federal and State income tax, sales and use tax, and property tax. The Manager of Tax willoversee the management and coordination of all tax analysis, reporting, tax research, planning, audits, reporting and compliance for the organization’s income, sales and use, and property taxes.

_Position-Related Responsibilities_

  • Ensure proper accounting and reporting of tax in compliance with ASC740, including preparation of the income tax provision and relevant disclosures.
  • Responsible for technical analysis and evaluation of critical tax accounting policies and conclusions including valuation allowances and FIN48.
  • Manage and perform technical review of filings for income, sales and use, property, and other taxes.
  • Assist in overseeing all tax audits and controversies including accumulating documentation and preparing responses to inquiries.
  • Manage preparation of work papers to support federal and state income tax compliance requirements of the Company, including quarterly estimated tax payments.
  • Research technical issues and assess impact of tax legislative changes to the Company.
  • Ensure timely filing and remittance of tax payments and returns.
  • Responsible for working with internal and external financial statement auditors including responding to inquiries and resolving issues.
  • Supervise and assign responsibility to staff to enhance their professional development and provide staff with on-the-job training on technical issues.
  • Analyze and make changes to processes to enhance efficiency/effectiveness and maintain internal controls.
  • Responsible for participating in directing completion of Tax related responses to regulatory data requests and work papers required for regulatory filings (e.g., FERC and ACC).
  • Develop tax planning opportunities and lead the tax analysis done in connection with development and implementation of business strategies.
  • Work with outside tax counsel, accountants and consultants as needed to identify opportunities and resolve technical issues.
  • Build strong relationships with business leaders and advise senior leadership on new legislation and key issues impacting the company.
  • Collaborate with other Tax Leadership in the organization on consolidated tax returns, tax sharing agreements, and technical issues.

_Management Responsibilities_

  • Responsible for developing an effective team of accounting professionals.

  • Ensure that the Company’s management principles, policies and programs are consistently practiced and continually support the Affirmative Action Plan.

  • Assume fiduciary responsibility for operating the business and provide recommendations on cost improvement measures.

  • Ensure that the Performance Management program is administered uniformly and effectively.

  • Comply with and administer the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement when applicable.

  • Administers personnel functions, including recruiting, review and approval of job descriptions and salary classifications, and selection and placement of personnel. Participates in hiring, termination, promoting, assignment and direction of staff. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards, company policies, practices and ethical obligations to investigate, evaluate and recommend appropriate resolution to employee complaints.

  • Promotes and participates in the professional development, personal growth and career planning of staff. Motivate, recognize and reward, coach, counsel, train; provide feedback to employees during performance reviews. Participates in Leadership Development programs.

  • Addresses disciplinary and/or performance issues, according to company policy, and communicates effectively with employees regarding corrective action. Has input into the adjustment of grievances and administration of discipline.

  • Develops departmental business plans, plans day-to-day operations, estimates personnel needs and schedules and assigns work. Evaluate the structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group.

  • Responsible for promoting a safe work environment and ensuring the company is in compliance with employee safety rules and regulations.

  • This position provides services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Director of Tax

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting is required, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting, from an accredited college or university. A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in accounting.

  • CPA certification is required for this position.

  • Must possess thorough knowledge of income tax law and income tax accounting pronouncements and related technical literature.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate with all personnel levels within the organization, including senior management.

  • Must have knowledge of internal controls. Must be able to evaluate and effectively create and implement changes to maintain proper internal controls and enhance efficiency.

  • Must be able to effectively supervise multiple projects to successful completion

  • Must possess strong analytical and effective decision making skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Big 4 accounting firm and gas/electric utility experience strongly preferred.

  • An advanced degree is preferred (e.g., MBA).

Manager of Tax

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting is required, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting, from an accredited college or university. A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in accounting
