This technical position in the Security and Network Operations Center supports the critical telecommunications infrastructure used by GSOC, GTC, and the Family of Companies to reliably deliver power to the state of Georgia. Day-to-day tasks for this position include configuring, monitoring, and maintaining fiber networks, routers, switches, firewalls, ROADM, and other network devices to support critical system operations of SCADA networks, broadband internet service, point-to-point customer connectivity, telephone services, and other various networks operated by GSOC. This position performs all configuration related tasks through a ticketed change management process to ensure proper approval and accurate documentation of changes are captured. May serve as a first point of contact to support network operations for GSOC, GTC, and the FOC (Family of Companies). This position is responsible to ensure constant communications through remote repair or dispatching other resources as well as to communicate situational awareness to leadership and the responsible stake holders. This position requires compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, industry standards, corporate policies, guidelines, and procedures, including but not limited to, RUS, OSHA, NERC, FERC and ITS requirements. Must be willing to engage and participate in an environment of compliance and continuous improvement to meet the Corporation’s goals and objectives. This shift-based position (which may include 8 or 12hr shifts as needed) includes 24/7 support requiring that the individual be available after hours as needed.

Job Duties:

  • Operate, Monitor, and maintain networks and systems including routers, switches, firewalls, ROADM and other transport equipment through remote support or by dispatching field support teams as needed, including dispatching 3rd party telecommunications service providers as needed.

  • Provide telephone and email operations support for field operations personnel. Including updating relevant documentation and other related tasks as needed.

  • Coordinate the maintenance, installation, configuration, and acceptance testing of new connectivity and equipment with both internal resources as well as 3rd party telecommunications service providers.

  • Network Technician/Operator I

  • Sends written communications that inform situational awareness to relevant stakeholders.

  • Implements prescribed procedure based and automation tasks as designed by professional level administrators.

  • Network Technician/Operator II

  • Develops and sends written communications that inform situational awareness for ongoing and planned maintenance to inform relevant stakeholders.

  • Implements and suggests improvements to prescribed automation tasks as designed by professional level operations administrators.

  • Supports escalated network support issues from the Network Operations Center.

  • Suggests improvements to technical procedures to capture operational experience and suggest design enhancements as needed.

  • Responsible for providing on the job training for level I associates on operations procedures and implementing training certification tasks.

  • Participate in lessons learned sessions, analyze communication and equipment failures, and generate outage reports with a focus on continuous improvement.

    Required Qualifications:

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field.

    Experience:

  • Network Technician/Operator I-

  • Experience in network operations or engineering with expertise in routing, switching, or network security using various equipment vendors. Familiarity with product families such as Cisco, Juniper, etc. a plus. Proficient in network administration desired.

  • Network Technician/ Operator II-

  • 2 years’ experience in network operations or engineering with expertise in routing, switching, or network security using various equipment vendors. Familiarity with product families such as Cisco, Juniper, etc a plus. Proficient in network administration desired.

    Equivalent Experience:

  • Network Technician/Operator I-

  • Associates Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field with at least 2 years of experience as stated above in any of the following areas: Business administration, Telecommunications, Industrial control systems, or Information Technology, OR

  • 4 years or more of experience as stated above in any of the following areas: Business administration, Telecommunications, Industrial control systems, or Information Technology.

  • Network Technician/ Operator II-

  • Associates Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or related field with at least 4 years of experience as stated above in any of the following areas: Business administration, Telecommunications, Industrial control systems, or Information Technology, OR

  • 6 years or more of experience as stated above in any of the following areas: Business administration, Telecommunications, Industrial control systems, or Information Technology.

    Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations: Georgia Driver’s License. Must obtain and maintain Bulk Electric System Cyber Authorized Status as defined in GSOC's CIP Cyber Security Policy 301 and NERC Reliability Standard CIP 004 - Personnel Risk Assessment. Technical certifications such as CCNA, CCDP, or other equivalent is preferred.

    Specialized Skills: Demonstrated ability to interface with Customers both verbal and written; ability to manipulate network and information technology equipment using skills such as Routing, Switching, Access Control, or similar. Computer literate - proficient in the use of remote access software, MS/Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

    Unusual Hours: May involve an atypical work schedule, including nights and weekends, to minimize outages and service disruption to clients/customers. Unusual hours required of this position also include: 7X24 standby/on-call duty (shared with other associates).
