About Us : As part of the Protection Engineering team, we are the driving force behind the design and operation of protective relay equipment. Our primary mission is to detect abnormal power system conditions and swiftly initiate corrective actions to restore the power system to its normal state. Protection engineering is all about safeguarding electrical power systems from faults by isolating faulty components from the rest of the electrical network. We also play a crucial role in engineering system protection schemes while providing essential maintenance and operational support.

Our team supports Generation and Substations, covering both Transmission and Distribution voltages. This diversity provides a wealth of opportunities to build technical expertise. Moreover, you'll have the chance to develop into a Quality Assurance expert, ensuring the highest standards for relay settings. All settings are rigorously peer-reviewed before being deployed to Relay Techs in the field.

What you’ll be responsible for:

  • Maintaining currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and independently applying professional knowledge of engineering processes and standards. Ensuring protection systems meet system requirements, applicable codes and regulatory requirements; contributing substantially to documentation to establish PGE compliance with WECC and FERC protection criteria; maintaining a high level of engineering proficiency within the field of specialization and up-to-date technical knowledge of all current techniques, applicable codes and regulations.

  • Preparing a variety of moderately complex engineering deliverables; leads smaller project teams. Performs a wide range of system fault analysis to determine project relay requirements and protective relay settings and provides relay settings for new relay installations and vintage relay replacements. Contributes to special fault studies in support of planning, design, maintenance or operational activities.

  • Assigning tasks and coordinating with other internal/external team members as directed on less complex projects; sharing information and providing professional guidance in executing project tasks. Partnering with engineers to implement efficient, reliable distribution automation schemes in support of Smart Grid Initiatives; providing engineering expertise to Power Supply Engineering Services for generation plant and distributed generation protection design and settings; partnering with automation engineers to implement efficient, reliable substation control and protection systems; providing engineering expertise to testing and energization engineers and Meter/Relay/SCADA technicians for relay testing and maintenance activities; providing engineering expertise to communications engineers for new construction activities; provides engineering expertise to distribution engineers on line recloser settings and feeder protection.

  • Sharing current knowledge of latest technology and processes; may assist with mentoring, recognition and any corrective actions required.

What you need to be qualified:

  • Education Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering. ABET accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency preferred.

  • Experience Typically two or more years in engineering.

  • Certifications, Licenses and Training Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam strongly preferred; may be required based upon role.

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with substation relay protection

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Proficiency in problem solving and analysis.

  • Skill and knowledge in specialized protection software.

  • Effective at building professional interdepartmental relationships.

  • Deal effectively with pressure of real-time problem solving.

*PGE supports hybrid flexible work arrangements; and will have a combination of in-the-office and working offsite. However, these arrangements may change due to business needs or changes in responsibility.

Compensation Range:

$78,075.00 - $183,000.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
