Portland General Electric Senior Transmission Analyst in Tualatin, Oregon

Job Function Summary

Analyzes and interprets transmission-related western region electricity market rules, operations and data to advise and guide various PGE staff and traders in developing strategies that optimize PGE’s Merchant Power operations and financials.

Key Responsibilities

Market Analysis Applies advanced knowledge of transmission-related market dynamics, such as LMP pricing, nodal basis risks, congestion risks, etc. in conducting complex analyses, using available data or by performing SCED analysis, to inform PGE’s trading activities and strategies in the commodity market; oversees or personally monitors and assesses the impact of changes to transmission-related market rules, system conditions, or operations that have a financial and/or operational impact on PGE and integrates changes in operational systems and/or ensures relevant changes are applied in PGE’s bidding and asset operations systems; analyzes settlements and a wide range of market data to fulfill complex data requests in support of numerous groups within PGE; analyzes the impact of commodity market operations on overall cost and reliability.

Transmission Analysis and Operations Support Serves as Company resource for Merchant Transmission operations; applies advanced knowledge of transmission-related grid operations in the commodity market to provide strategic courses of action to ensure PGE has adequate transmission rights to meet native load customer needs and to provide consultation to senior management in the merchant transmission arena; analyzes changes in market rules and design, analyzes and interprets complex operational and market data and recommends short-term and long-term operational plans and strategies to optimize profits and reliability; acts as resource for both operational and rate-making purposes.

Analytic and Reporting Tools Designs, develops and implements statistical forecast models and reporting tools to analyze and evaluate energy and transmission economic opportunities, including financial instruments and regulatory strategies; oversees or personally builds business logics in database and maintains database; provides training and guidance on analytic tools to less experienced colleagues.

Project Engagement and Management Serves as a subject matter expert for enterprise wide transmission-related projects that bridge both trading and grid operations; sets and implements data strategy in collaboration with management; leads cross-functional teams in developing strategies; provides training and guidance on evaluating projects and trading strategies to less experienced colleagues; works collaboratively with groups across PGE to support trading, scheduling, position management and resource bidding activities and in developing longer-term planning and forecasting.

Communications and Presentations Prepares and distributes market update communications and presentations to internal stakeholders including transmission-related analytics/forecasts and to operations staff to support trading strategies; leads operating strategy meetings with grid and power operations hourly staff and management.

External Relations Represents PGE Merchant in external forums and meetings with other utilities and regulatory agencies to share/exchange information; participates in industrywide policy formulation groups; works collaboratively with cross-functional teams in preparing, filing and presenting regulatory filings

Regulatory Compliance Leads, coordinates and supports PGE’s interactions with external enforcement agencies; contributes to PGE’s processes to demonstrate compliance and responses to audits; serves as company witness and subject-matter expert in legal and rate-making testimony.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education Requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, finance, economics, or computer programming or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience Typically, eight or more years in power trading, structuring, research, analysis, engineering, programming, design, modeling, power systems operations and/or wholesale power market operations or in a related field.

Compensation Range:

$104,325.00 - $233,610.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
