Real Time Trader/Senior Real Time Trader - Tualatin, OR area

Department Summary

The Energy Supply Team purchases and sells energy and energy products directly to/from end users and intermediaries under negotiated rates and terms and trades energy. Responsible for strategy development/implementation, commercial negotiations, outbound marketing, transaction origination, structuring and negotiation, risk management and trading of energy and distribution and/or interconnection and transmission of energy through other organizations' transmission and distribution systems. Facilitates development of strategic business cases and leads commercial negotiations during implementation of these projects. Optimizes PGE’s portfolio assets by trading in the electricity and gas market to serve PGE’s load demand reliably and economically.

Position Summary

This position purchases and sells energy on an hourly/daily basis to meet fluctuations in supply and demand not covered by day-ahead schedules; ensures that pricing and terms are favorable and consistent with company risk management guidelines. This position is hybrid with day shifts at our new Integrated Operations Center in Tualatin, Oregon, and nights/weekends/holidays the option to work from home if preferred. This opening may be filled as a mid or senior level role and salary will be commensurate with skills and experience.


  • Monitoring reservoir levels, wind forecasts and fuels supply to optimize use of generation resources and arrange generation operations to meet load and reserve requirements for each hour.

  • Negotiates all real-time energy sales, purchases and wheeling arrangements with other entities, including hourly and daily sales of surplus power throughout the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC).

  • Documents and maintains records for PGE’s Merchant Real Time Operations’ activities and wholesale power transactions.

  • Redirects and/or purchases transmission to meet PGE’s needs for Merchant Real Time Operations’ activities.

  • Develops or is recognized as an authority of the power trading/scheduling system and develops working relationships with scheduling personnel, energy marketers and utilities to transact business.

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Mid-Level: Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, finance, business, economics or other related field or equivalent experience. Typically, five or more years in the energy industry or related field.

Senior Level: Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, finance, business, economics or other related field or equivalent experience. Typically, eight or more years in the energy industry or related field.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in Western United States energy or gas trading is highly desired.

  • Experience in generation dispatching or real- time operation of power plants or transmission systems.

  • Ability to analyze data, find solutions and make decisions quickly.

  • Strong communication skills; verbal and written.

  • Ability to learn and understand changing technologies.

  • Advanced knowledge of electric bulk power generation, transmission and operating systems

  • Advanced knowledge of regional electric utilities, Northwest and Southwest power markets and power and wheeling market pricing and practice

  • Advanced skills in analyzing energy market conditions or trends

  • Advanced knowledge of the theory, precepts, practices and requirements of balancing authority operations

  • Advanced skills in negotiating contracts

  • Advanced computer skills in using spreadsheets

  • Advanced analytical thinking, diplomacy, and problem-solving skills

  • Advanced decision-making skills

  • Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively within a team environment


  • Ability to adhere to pre-established schedule, including start/stop time and break/lunch schedule

  • Ability to work long hours

  • Ability to work a variable schedule

  • Ability to report to work and perform work during periods of severe inclement weather

  • Ability to consistently meet attendance standards for regular, reliable, predictable, full-time attendance

  • Ability to work shift and work on-call schedule
