Job Summary/Purpose
The Lighting sales and service organization provides lighting solutions to residential, commercial, government and industrial customers. The organization offers lighting products, retrofits, and future technologies while managing installations, maintenance, and operations. They develop and execute sales strategies, provide customer education and technical support, administer incentive programs, manage partnerships with lighting vendors, and monitor the performance of the utility's lighting offerings.
The Director of Lighting is responsible for leading the utilities’ efforts to promote and sell lighting products and services to residential, commercial, government, and industrial customers. This includes serving as the single accountable leader for the development and implementation of product strategy and roadmaps, sales strategies, customer service, product management and support to drive adoption and profitability of the utilities’ lighting offerings.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
Product Strategy:
Conduct in-depth market research and analysis to identify customer needs, pain points, and preferences for lighting products and services across residential, commercial, government, and industrial sectors. Use these insights to inform the development of the utility operating companies’ lighting product and service offerings.
Analyze market trends, customer feedback, and competitor activities to identify new opportunities for lighting product sales and service.
Collaborate with the utility operating companies and cross-functional teams, including marketing, engineering and operations, supply chain, regulatory and IT, to create an overall product strategy and comprehensive lighting roadmap that aligns with the utility operating companies’ business strategy. Ensure the product portfolio addresses insights from existing offerings, evolving customer demands and emerging industry trends.
Product Management:
Lead cross-functional product development teams to identify, evaluate, and select new lighting technologies and solutions to add to the utility's product portfolio. Ensure these products address the evolving needs and preferences of residential, commercial, government, and industrial customers.
Establish and maintain strong relationships with lighting manufacturers, distributors, and other industry partners to secure favorable terms and access to the latest technologies.
Establish robust product lifecycle management processes to continuously monitor the performance, customer satisfaction, and market competitiveness of the utility's lighting offerings. Make data-driven decisions to enhance, update, or retire products based on changing customer demands and industry trends.
Collaborate with the marketing team to develop comprehensive product information, training materials, and customer-facing resources to support the effective promotion and sale of the lighting products. Ensure all product claims, specifications, and customer-facing information are accurate and aligned with industry standards.
Monitor and report on key performance indicators, such as sales volume, customer satisfaction, and return on investment, to continuously improve the lighting products and services.
Manage the sales forecasts, budgets and financial performance of the lighting products sales, service, support and operations.
Own or oversee pilots and project execution and change management plans on lighting roadmap with cross-functional deliverables.
Product Sales:
Develop and oversee the implementation of strategic sales and marketing plans to effectively promote the utility operating companies’ lighting products and services to target customer segments. This includes setting sales targets, optimizing pricing and incentive structures, training and driving customer adoption through tailored engagement campaigns.
Design and oversee the execution of targeted customer engagement programs to effectively promote the utilities’ lighting offerings and drive customer participation. This may include the use of marketing campaigns, customer education initiatives, product demonstrations, and strategic partnerships with lighting retailers and contractors.
Continuously monitor and analyze sales performance data, customer feedback, and market trends to identify opportunities for improvement and optimization of the sales and customer engagement strategies. Leverage these insights to refine the sales approach, training and enhance the customer experience.
Product Support and Operations:
Oversee the collaboration of the product and operations team to provide input on the technical specifications, performance, and compatibility of new lighting products being considered for the product portfolio.
Oversee the lighting installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting guidelines to support the sales and customer service teams during normal operations and after incident response events.
Monitor and streamline the processes for lighting order fulfillment, product delivery, and customer installation and support and ensure proper billing. Identify and address any operational bottlenecks or inefficiencies that could impact the customer experience or the overall success of the lighting products and services.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum education required of the position
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Engineering, Economics, Accounting, or related field or equivalent work experience.
Minimum experience required of the position
- Proven experience (typically 8+ years) in product management and related roles with significant experience in portfolio management and leadership positions.
