The Engineer is responsible for the complete engineering development and design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection construction documents associated with new buildings and renovations for: consulting design projects, design-build projects, and performance contract projects. With minimal supervision, the Engineer will work under the direction of the Manager from project conception through construction completion. Associated responsibilities include but are not limited to; engineering design and drafting, specification writing, cost estimating, field investigations and construction site visits, HVAC load calculations and modeling, hydraulic calculations, and coordination with other trades including electrical, structural, and architectural disciplines. Responsibilities also include performing site visits, energy savings calculations, developing cost budgets, and written descriptions of energy conservation measures in support of performance contract projects.
Lead and manage the design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for new and renovated building construction on consulting that will be constructed by the Owner’s contractors.
Lead and manage the design and construction of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for building retrofit construction on design-build projects that will be constructed for the Owner.
Studies and analyses of mechanical and plumbing systems documenting the conditions, presenting cost effective solutions, and generating reports with recommendations.
Conduct code research in support of project development. Apply current technology and stay abreast of new and upcoming technologies. Cross train office staff with new opportunities and options.
Prepare project specifications along with supporting information.
Perform job site visits to verify and document existing construction conditions and to observe and document the contractor’s work. Direct site construction activities for design-build projects.
Perform engineering calculations for equipment and systems sizing.
Generate proposals for engineering and design-build projects based on Owner needs. Detail engineering efforts in tasks and hours. Develop detailed cost budgets for build projects.
Be responsible for and track the project cost outcomes including revenue and gross margin while maintaining project schedules and deliverables. For design-build projects manage subcontractors and vendors.
Perform energy audit walk-thrus of existing facilities to document existing conditions and identify retrofit opportunities for energy conservation. Write a detailed report on the identified and investigated retrofit energy conservation measures (ECM) that will be used to produce an Investment Grade Audit (IGA) that will be used as the basis for a performance contract.
Work in conjunction with the Manager to develop the technical abilities of the support staff.
- Undergraduate (BS) degree in mechanical engineering and PE registration as a professional engineer required.
Over 10 years if Senior Engineer applicant or 5 years of experience if Engineer II applicant in mechanical systems design to include; HVAC, chilled water systems, hot water systems, steam systems, plumbing systems, and fire protection systems with a minimum of 3 years in healthcare construction; Over 3 years of experience in mechanical design-build projects including the management of the project construction is preferred.
Familiarity with LEED and green building design is preferred.
Experience in energy analysis to identify, screen, and develop energy conservation measures for PC and design build projects is preferred.
Able to plan and manage the development and production of permit and contract documents for the construction of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protections systems.
Able to interact effectively across organizational boundaries to achieve goals and meet deadlines.
Good knowledge of local and national building codes and standards to include; Florida Building Codes, NFPA Codes, USBC LEED standards and ASHRAE 90.1.
Experience in the overall integration of design engineering, construction, start-up/turnover, and subsequent operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.
Strong leadership, verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
Engineering, analytical and technical writing skills with attention to detail.
Travel and light duty work required.
