Job Purpose

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant role will independently run an internal, corporate, private medical practice to provide evaluation, consultation/referral, case management and, in some cases, treatment for employees. This role will ensure medical regulatory compliance for the ongoing health and wellbeing of our workforce, provide education to reduce the frequency of lost-time incidents (e.g., absences and medical leaves) due to illness or injury. This role will collaborate with both the business and external medical providers to safely and promptly return employees to work following an illness or injury.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform pre-employment physical exams on all new employees and be responsible for the evaluation, treatment, and case management of occupational injuries (acute and chronic care) to support the health and well-being of employees, thereby reducing lost time incidents/absences.

  • Provide care for walk-ins.

  • Manage the operations of the on-site health office, including but not limited to: maintaining the appointment schedule, ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, etc

  • Assess and/or monitor employee fitness for duty by performing physical examinations and conducting respiratory

  • Fit testing (RFT) and auditory examinations to ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and recommendations.

  • Educate and support employees regarding preventative health, early intervention, and effectively managing chronic conditions, particularly (but not limited to) hypertension, sleep apnea, diabetes, and mental health challenges/disorders.

  • Work with both the business and external medical providers to return employees back to work promptly following illness or injury.

  • Review and analyze pertinent surveillance data (regarding DOT exams, hearing conservation, etc.) and share findings with stakeholders for performance management, quality improvement, and regulatory reporting purposes.

  • Evaluate employee compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety standards and regulations and provide education, treatment plan, and recommendations to support compliance with safety standards.

  • Conduct point-of-care testing, specifically urinalysis via test strip and blood glucose level(s) via fingersticks; and collect urine for drug testing (i.e., pre-employment, random, and reasonable-cause) by an external laboratory.

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills required to provide care for injured and ill employees,

  • collaborate with team members across disciplines and departments, and interface with external partners (medical providers, vendors, etc.).

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key internal stakeholders and external medical providers in order to share best practices and understand business decisions.

  • Perform other pertinent duties as assigned and within NP or PA scope of professional practice

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Strong interpersonal skills required to provide care for injured and ill employees.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key internal stakeholders and external medical providers in order to share best practice and understand business decisions.

Qualifications

Required:

  • NP applicants only: Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing

  • PA applicants only: Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies

  • PA applicants only: Current board certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA); and certification maintenance as required to maintain NYS licensure, i.e., recertification via PANRE or PANRE-LA every six years.

  • Active New York state license certified for NP or PA

  • Minimum of three years’ experience (i.e., over the last three years) providing direct clinical care as NP or PA, specifically caring for adults in a primary care/family medicine private practice or clinic

  • Within six (6) months of hire, attain the following:

  • certification by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to perform Department of Transportation physical examinations,

  • certification as a Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist (COHC) by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC), and

  • spirometry training in a program approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

  • Current certification as a Basic Lifesaver (BLS) provider from a training program approved by the American Heart Association (AHA)

Preferred:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent NP or PA experience (i.e., within the last seven years), specifically providing direct clinical care to adults

  • Experience in providing direct clinical care in Occupational Medicine, inclusive of knowledge of OSHA regulations and familiarity with NYS Workers’ Compensation laws and practices.

  • Current certification by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to perform Department of Transportation physical examinations.

  • Current COHC certification by CAOHC

  • Current spirometry training in a NIOSH-approved program. A current course completion certificate will serve as evidence.

Salary

$104,000 - $122,000 a year
