Job Purpose

The Lead Solution Architect is accountable to design business solutions in response to specific business needs that are fit for purpose, compliant and adhere to all National Grid operational, architectural and design standards and principles. Ensure the integrity of solution designs from concept through implementation, balancing the architectural concerns of projects with concerns of the enterprise. Ensure consideration of all design alternatives and provide technical guidance to wider project team and business stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Actively contributes to Architectural working groups with EA and Business Development teams developing key business IT strategy with strong industry and commercial focus.

  • Co-ordinates design governance within a portfolio, Chairing governance architectural boards and acting as custodian of architecture plans across the wider businesses.

  • Takes responsibility for the technical integrity of projects, ensuring that common technical elements are recognized, and that work is not unnecessarily duplicated.

  • Assists in the development of service level agreements and any associated service guarantees. Advises on appropriate quality standards and quality control processes.

  • Drive development and maintenance of cost transparency and value tracking models for applications across a program.

  • Takes an active role in the development of other staff through mentoring of more junior resources.

  • Within a business change program, manages the program's target design, policies and standards, working proactively to achieve a stable and viable design.

  • Effectively manages key stakeholder relationships both collaboratively within the architectural community of Application Architects, the wider IT capabilities of solution design/delivery (including external vendors) and influential with the senior business leadership teams.


  • Educated to degree level in Computer Science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Experience applying standard architectures and patterns within solution designs.

  • 10-15+ years of Experience developing Solution Architectures

  • Knowledge of business analysis techniques, tools and requirements gathering.

  • Knowledge of basic networking concepts and design practices including; HTTP/S, TCP/IP, load balancers, firewalls, proxies.

  • Knowledge of various hosting environments and platforms (DC On Prem, Cloud, Azure, IaaS/PaaS, AWS)

  • Knowledge of integration techniques.

  • Minimum of 10 years solution design experience at an enterprise level.

  • Good written and verbal communications skills.

  • Good stakeholder management and influencing skills at project stakeholder level.

  • Ability to multi-task.
