National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we’ll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one – putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you’ll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

*About the Position *

As an Associate Engineer, you will support the internal Options Solutions Engineering Project team in developing conceptual engineering reports for small-and large-scale electric substation projects in New York. You will join the team responsible for tackling the first steps of these projects and answering the most important questions: Can this be done and how can this be done? You will engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, identify potential obstacles such as environmental concerns, and necessary permits, and ensure that your solutions meet the needs of our business and communities.

This is a hybrid role based in Syracuse, New York.

What You’ll Do

As an engineer on this team, you will set the initial direction of substation projects in New York.

In this role you will:

  • Provide technical support to various departments including Engineering, Design, Operations and Construction.

  • Work in a matrixed team environment and promote team effectiveness by providing technical guidance and communicating expectations to the team.

  • Work on multiple projects at one time while considering budget and time constraints.

  • Perform and check complex calculations and studies (steel structures, concrete foundations, etc.) to support substation projects.

  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of National Grid’s business operations, company policies and practices. Lead the development of new processes, policies, and standards.

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Graduated between May 2024 and June 2025   

  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 2, 2025 or July 7, 2025

  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy

  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization) 

It would be awesome if you had

  • Fundamentals or Engineering (FE) exam completed and passed

  • Knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current civil and structural engineering design codes including Concrete, soil and steel properties, ACI, ASCE, and ASTM Codes.

  • Experience building and maintaining a network of relationships, with both internal and external stakeholders.

Salary Range

Syracuse, New York $83,300 - $98,000 a year

Please note US Colleagues must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont. As a National Grid employee, you should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
