National Grid Engineer - Transmission Line Engineering, Standards and Support in Syracuse, New York
_About the Position:_
As a civil engineer supporting Transmission’s New York territory, the position will mainly provide reviews of non-National Grid projects located on or near National Grid’s transmission assets. More specifically the reviews require comments to plans and specifications issued by both third-party telecommunication companies with existing or proposed facilities on Transmission assets, and Property Transaction Reviews (PTR) as prepared by National Grid’s Real Estate Department and forwarded to Transmission Line Engineering’s Standards and Support team as a key stake-holder.
Third-party telecommunication attachment work deals mostly with commercial wireless companies in a fast-paced environment but requires great attention to Company standards and protection of Transmission assets.
The range of complexity varies greatly between PTRs. Reviews range from large commercial development proposals to simple perpendicular driveway crossings where both involve occupying our electrical corridor but must not interfere with the Company’s ability to safely operate and maintain reliable electrical service to our customers.
Existing Company standards have been developed to protect the Company’s established rights and this position requires the candidate to enforce those rights while treating each review with balanced judgement on behalf of the applicant.
_Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):_
Provide support for various National Grid departments in the high-voltage realm of electrical transmission and sub-transmission with a focus on preserving rights and protecting Transmission’s assets and access within a corridor, while considering future growth and safety.
Once on-board and acclimated, the position requires independent reviews of work packages and the ability to generate comments self-sufficiently for review by management.
Work closely with Real Estate and telecom personnel to assure National Grid standards and procedures are implemented.
Support all requests for incident analysis (IA’s) as Team Member and complete action items assigned.
Promote a strong safety culture through demonstrated leadership and being an ambassador for adherence to company procedures, safety rules, and work practices.
Review, revise and develop procedures for Transmission Line Engineering department.
Field work is minimal but will be required. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive to site locations.
Off-hours emergency storm reconnaissance and support of restoration work may be required with overnight travel.
Respond to and provide necessary support during local/system/mutual assistance emergencies.
_Knowledge & Experience Required:_
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (EIT or PE is desirable) with ten (10) years of permitting and site development experience with a structural focus; or an equivalent combination of higher education, training, and work experience will be considered.
Candidate must be able to perform reviews following National Grid standards on an independent basis.
Candidate must be familiar with regulatory standards and codes, with the ability to interpret and apply those standards accordingly in the interest of the Company and safety of the proposed work.
Candidate must be able to understand site development plans, including grading plans, drainage plans, and profiles.
Candidate must be able to understand structural engineering calculations and reports.
Candidate must be able to understand environmental reports and site drainage calculations.
Strong construction experience is preferred, candidate must have the ability to read construction drawings,site plans and understand property rights.
Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code and NYS High-Voltage Proximity Act is preferred
Experience understanding land rights and the ability to read deeds is preferred
Must be self-directed and highly motivated.
Requirements include strong interpersonal skills with high-level analytical skills.
Candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to write engineering reports.
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Position work area is in upstate New York for Transmission Line Engineering as primary role and location is TBD based on offer of employment.
