Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Water Quality Technician located at Gerald Gentleman Station in Sutherland , Nebraska. Position closes May 5, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Position Summary

Operate and maintain the site water treatment facilities as required to produce high purity water for use in the boiler and other plant systems such that corrosion in these systems is minimized. This position is also responsible for operating water treatment facilities in a manner which complies with environmental regulations, assisting with duties required for GGS environmental compliance, and performing basic chemistry lab functions in support of the seven day Water Plant / Chemistry Lab schedule.

Education, Training and Experience

High School diploma or GED.

Required within one year on the job: State of Nebraska certifications for operation of the Public Water Supply and waste water treatment systems, training and certification on USEPA Method 9 as a Visual Emissions Opacity Evaluator, and training in the principles of demineralization and reverse osmosis.

Two years experience in water plant operation and chemistry and biology lab procedures, or other work experience or demonstrated performance indicating that the applicant has the skills and ability to perform the required duties of the position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsible for the water plant - maintain the plant asset, initiate equipment update and upgrade, and operate equipment safely and efficiently.

Operate water plant systems and subsystems, including the demineralizer train components, condensate polisher, reverse osmosis (R/O) unit and transfer system, brinopak tank, zeolite softeners, 5-micron prefilters, and boiler and pre-boiler chemical feed systems.

Perform routine maintenance and inspection of water plant components including regeneration of demineralizer anion, cation, and mixed bed resins, regeneration of condensate polisher, periodic inspection of water plant vessels, and minor maintenance of other water plant equipment and structures.

Support the Corporate Environmental Department with monitoring and inspections for compliance with the NPDES, Title V Air, Ash Pit Landfill, Stormwater, Potable Water, and Injection Well Permits.

Create and maintain operating guides associated with activities required to perform water plant, chemistry lab duties.

Work extended work weeks (60-84 hours per week) and irregular hours, including holidays, weekends, and night shifts as needed, during station outages and emergencies.

Perform boiler, condensate and auxiliary system water chemistry control functions and be fit for duty on call when required by the Chemistry Lab and Water Plant coverage rotation schedule or specific unit startup schedule

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Pay Grade - 13 Hourly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $39.50 - $49.38

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
