Engineer III

Position Summary

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

This position provides data and modeling support for Duke Energy's Distribution SCADA (DSCADA) and Distribution Management Systems (DMS) in all jurisdictions, with a Florida focus This position works closely with the Distribution Control Centers, Grid Management, and field resources to maintain accurate data and models in these systems to ensure safe and reliable system operation. This position will work independently and with others to troubleshoot and resolve any data/modeling issues on the supported systems. This position will also support any data/modeling needs of the ADMS Program. During major storms this position supports electrical power service restoration according to documented jurisdictionally specific storm plans. This role requires an understanding of engineering principles, emerging technologies, communications skills, and the ability to work in cross functional teams to collaborate in decision making.

The location for this position is flexibile within the Duke Energy service area. **

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity,

  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities,

  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team,

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity,

  • Conducts engineering and related studies

  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems,

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies,

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,

  • Maintains accurate records and files, and

  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally

  • Supports the data and modeling needs of Duke's DSCADA, DMS, YFA, and OMS systems.

  • Coordinates FL's substation DMS/SCADA modeling and RTU configuration work, which includes:

  • Interpreting substation electric design drawings to prepare the RTU configuration specs,

  • Creating configuration specs into the RTU application (AcSELerator RTAC or Calisto View),

  • Coordinating with other groups to prioritize SCADA modeling, and

  • Coordinating with other groups to track construction dates.

  • Supports troubleshooting data conditions causing poor power flow results, which includes:

  • Running power flows in DMS and/or DOTS,

  • Determining causes for power flow issues,

  • Correcting DMS/DSCADA models causing power flow issues, and

  • Coordinating with other groups data fixes.

  • Supports major storm restoration activities.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a Master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

  • Minimum of four (4) years of engineering experience

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations,

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds,

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

  • Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Self-motivated individual demonstrating the ownership necessary to achieving results.

  • Strong understanding of electrical distribution power flow modeling;

  • Strong understanding of DMS/DSCADA database and modeling, especially GE’s;

  • Strong understanding of DMS/DSCADA communications protocols and facilities, including DNP3.00, ICCP, ISD, Fast Message etc.;

  • Understanding of DMS/DSCADA troubleshooting skills;

  • Understanding of DMS/DSCADA front end communications processor and field device configuration settings;

  • Understanding of DMS/DSCADA substation and field device operations characteristics and functional checkout ;

  • Understanding of Distribution Control Center and Grid Management processes;

  • Aptitude of computers, desktop software applications and IT processes;

  • Experience working in an operational environment with emphasis on problem isolation and resolution;

  • Able to manage multiple tasks and assignments effectively and accurately;

  • Interact professionally and effectively with cross functional teams;

  • Good interpersonal and customer-service skills;

  • Good planning, data analysis, evaluating alternatives, and preparing and presenting recommendations;

  • Good organizational skills;

  • Commitment to Safety and Human Performance Fundamentals;

  • Compliance with processes & procedures; and

  • Innovative and receptive to change.
