Job Summary

Dominion Energy seeks a highly‐motivated Power Plant Controls Specialist/Engineer to support the day-to-day operations of the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center. Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center is a coal and wood waste fired power plant in the Southwest Virginia Coal Region, with a net generating capacity of approximately 610 nMW. The Virginia City site is located near St. Paul, Virginia. This facility became commercial operations in July of 2012.

The successful candidate will provide instrument and controls support for a conventional steam generating facility consisting of two sub‐critical, single reheat Circulating Fluidized Bed boilers with an SNCR and an air quality control system, one reheat condensing steam turbine, and an air‐cooled condenser. The successful candidate will be able to provide the support in accordance with applicable codes and regulatory requirements; Provide technical expertise in troubleshooting power plant Programmable Electronic Systems (Distributed Control Systems and Programmable Logic Control Systems) during start‐up and operations; Provide technical support in the development and review of work scopes, test procedures, alarm response procedures, and preventative maintenance procedures; Write/Modify control system logic to optimize plant performance and/or control; Perform oversight of OEM control modifications; Tune complex control loops for optimal system performance; Ensure compliance with regulatory, industry, and various program requirements; Read and understand pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, and electronic documentation and drawings, and interpret equipment data, and/or read and understand air monitoring system documentation and drawings; Test, inspect, and adjust control instrumentation and determine causes of instrument malfunction; Maintain control logic modification process; Maintain and configure data historian; Perform and maintain control system backups; Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

The ideal candidate will have Start‐up/operational support experience for fossil power plants; Emerson Ovation experience; Control system upgrade experience; PLC experience (Allen Bradley, Modicon, and Eaton); Control system network and cyber security experience; PI Administration and user experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Valid state driver's license required.

  • Associates of Science Degree in Engineering Technology with five years of related experience, or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with 3 years of related experience, or PE license with four years of related experience, or Eight years of related experience.

  • Demonstrated skills in the use of advanced controls techniques with hands‐on experience of power plant control systems;

  • In‐depth knowledge of industry advances in control system monitoring, testing, and analysis of controls equipment;

  • In‐depth knowledge of field instrumentation and control valves;

  • In‐depth knowledge of electrical and electronics theory;

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; Full knowledge of engineering theories and principles;

  • Strong written and oral communication skills;

  • Strong personal computer skills;

  • Proven decision‐making skills;

  • Strong organizational and project management skills;

  • Ability to solve problems and to process information quickly.

Education Requirements

Associates of Science Degree in Engineering Technology with five years of related experience, or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with 3 years of related experience, or PE license with four years of related experience, or Eight years of related experience.
