Position Specific Description

The Supervisor of Science is responsible for the leading, planning, execution, and overseeing of applied research and development activities for new and existing products supporting both internal and external stakeholders. Employees in this role will directly supervise, lead, and participate in, small cross-functional teams engaged in solving challenging, complex, and interdisciplinary energy and market problems through the application of sound scientific, mathematical, and programming principles. This position will provide technical guidance and thought leadership to higher levels in the organization.

  • Plans, oversees, leads, and executes advanced research and development activities requiring the use of large field data sets from wind turbines, solar modules, battery storage, and other energy/power industry and market data sources

  • Designs, prototypes, tests, and implements production-level algorithmic solutions to energy-related scientific and mathematical problems in R, Python, Julia, or similar language

  • Supervises direct report contributions and manages the performance and talent management processes

  • Provides thought leadership and scientific support to other internal teams and management regarding non-standard analytics and other challenges that arise in their workflow

  • Defines and owns the scientific and analytical roadmap for a project or product and stays up to date on scientific, mathematical, and programming best practices

  • Advises management on relevant research and development opportunities as well as other scientific and energy industry advances

  • Documents and communicates technical results to varying levels of management within and outside the organization to audiences of varying technical aptitude

  • Defines and owns the scientific and analytical roadmap for a project or product and stays up to date on scientific, mathematical, and programming best practices

Job Overview

Employees in this role responsible for providing high level scientific research expertise for activities associated with new product initiatives, new and on-going development activities and applied and fundamental scientific research. Individuals in this position lead cross-departmental high quality scientific research and interface with other internal departments as well as customers in the development and definition of research projects and products while advising Chief Scientist and the Lead team on findings. This position is responsible for proposing, designing and executing experiments and research on new products and analytical concepts focused on company strategy. Employees in this role mentor junior scientists and analysts to develop skills, as well as perform team management duties in coordination with the Chief Scientist.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Proposes, designs and executes experiments and research for new products and analytical concepts and researches and implements new scientific methods

  • Coaches, mentors, and supervises the work of junior scientists to promote skill development

  • Performs team management duties in coordination with the Chief Scientist

  • Interfaces with internal departments as well as customers in the development and definition of research projects and products

  • Advises Chief Scientist and the lead team based on research findings and documents the results of scientific research through reports and presentations as well as representing the group in multidepartment meetings

  • Provides science leadership and oversight over operational systems as well as high level scientific expertise for new and ongoing analysis products, serving as science lead and performing in house reviews of proposals and operational concepts

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

  • Experience: 6+ years
