Position Specific Description
NextEra Analytics is currently seeking a well-qualified candidate to join our growing Applied Math Group (AMG) as an Applied Math Team Lead in St. Paul, Minnesota. The AMG is a team of Data Scientists and Mathematicians who work on a variety of products and R&D projects for NextEra Analytics, our customers, and our parent company NextEra Energy. The new Team Lead will report to the Director of Applied Math, and will divide their time between technical work and supervisory duties.
The Team Lead’s supervisory duties will include:
Direct supervision of a subset of the AMG including performance planning and review
Maintaining awareness of NextEra Analytics program of work, helping plan and execute quarterly goals, and prioritizing requests for AMG resources
Organizing, promoting and supporting professional development for the AMG team
Contributing to AMG resource planning and recruitment
Mentoring and coaching to more junior team members.
The Team Lead’s technical duties will include:
Solving difficult problems by applying techniques from mathematics, statistics, computer science, and related disciplines
Developing software products and services in collaboration with our engineering, science and business vertical teams
Applying mathematical formulations, scientific rigor and an independent viewpoint to business analyses
Responding quickly and effectively to new (and recycled) business problems as they arise.
The successful candidate will have established Applied Math expertise, excellent people skills, and the desire to bring fresh enthusiasm to the development of Data Science and Applied Math as a discipline in NEA. Prior management experience is desirable but not required.
Job Overview
This position is responsible for leading the development of algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., “Big Data”).
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Provide thought leadership, set technical strategy, and identify possible uses of data science methods
Explain methods and results to upper-level executives
Develop machine learning, optimizations or other modeling solutions
Oversee related employee work, learn new techniques being developed
Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses
Works with big data and distributed computing platforms
Develops software and contributes to product development
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
