JOB TITLE: Lead Operations Trainer

DEPARTMENT: Generation Training – Jeffrey Energy Center

LOCATION: St. Marys, KS

PAY RANGE: $93,100 - $124,100

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Other hours as required)

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The purpose of this position is to improve operational excellence and reliability by enhancing employee knowledge & skills with investments in training. Collaborate with fossil & renewable plant stakeholders to proactively identify, design, develop and implement consistent plant operations training. Position Operators for success by exhibiting strong routine engagement with those working within a qualification or apprenticeship program. Perform and coordinate training material maintenance to keep information up to date and relevant.

The Operations Trainer will be responsible for coordinating initiatives at the plant level, including operator training, safety related training, human performance improvement initiatives, and best practice implementation.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Coordinate new Operator Qualification and/or Apprenticeship programs for all levels of plant operations.

  • Design, develop and implement Control Room Operator (CRO) refresher training and plant systems training for all levels of Operations.

  • Exhibit strong understanding of Human & Org Performance concepts and provide training on these concepts in conjunction with Operator Qualifications / Apprenticeships.

  • Embody a team-oriented mindset, collaborate with peers across Generation Safety & Training to share best practices.

  • Lead Joint Apprentice Committee meetings with Union Locals and Plant Management (if applicable)

  • Exhibit strong technical writing skills to ensure training documentation is kept up to date and relevant.

  • Develop training material for new equipment and/or changes to the plant.

  • Collaborate with plant stakeholders to identify training solutions to drive continuous improvement.

  • Supervise plant simulator activities including utilization of and enhancements to simulator capabilities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements:

A High school diploma or equivalent is required. Control Room Operator experience at Jeffrey Energy Center with 6 or more years of power generation experience is required. Specific experience in power plant operations, training development and instructing, plant performance evaluation, and procedure development is preferred. Operations Supervisor experience is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or other related technology is preferred but not required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:

  • Applied Knowledge – Control Room Operator qualification and Jeffrey Energy Center plant knowledge is required.

  • Oral Expression – Must have the ability to communicate with others clearly and effectively.

  • Written Communication Skills – Able to draft correspondence to clearly communicate and perform technical writing duties.

  • Self-Reliance – Must be able to perform in a semi-autonomous position and manage multiple priorities.

  • Must have strong human relations skills; ability to work effectively with individuals in various union and non-union positions and levels of the Company.

  • Must be highly proficient with Microsoft Office and Learning Management Systems.

  • Coachability – Receptive to feedback and willing to provide feedback to others.

  • Thorough understanding of safe work practices and union contracts.

Working Conditions:

Work location is Jeffrey Energy Center, but at times will be required to support training initiatives at other Evergy locations in collaboration with peers. Working conditions will require indoor and outdoor work at our generation facilities. Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
