Job Title: HDD Project Engineer

Duties: Under minimal supervision, provides engineering expertise for the assessment and design of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and Direct Pipe® projects. Performs pipe stress and pullback calculation, hydraulic fracture analysis, and interpreting geotechnical data used in HDD plan and profile design. Reviews RFQ, technical documents and develops technical proposals for bidding projects associated with HDD. Performs cost estimation for bidding projects associated with HDD and Direct Pipe® projects. Stamps and seals HDD engineering calculations and design when required. Provides engineering expertise in structural design used to support the operation associated with HDD. Develops drilling plan for execution of HDD projects such as equipment layout design, downhole tooling design, pipe buoyancy control plan, pipe overbend lifting plan, and estimation of drilling fluid/cuttings disposal. Provides technical and engineering support to project manager and drilling superintendent at jobsite. Assists provision of advice and analysis to the client representative at the project site including survey calculation, project path, and engineering associated inquiry. Collects and analyzes field data used as key performance indicator (KPI) for estimating, project management support, and corporate business decision purposes. Handles research and development of the HDD downhole tooling, equipment, and new technology.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering. Five (5) years related experience as a Project Engineer, Project Manager, Staff Engineer, or related occupation. Experience is required and must include: Performing engineering design, interpreting data, and estimating for HDD trenchless projects such as pipe pulling stress analysis, torque and drag analysis, mud pressure loss calculation, hydrofracture analysis, equipment layout, and breakover curve design for pullback phase based on product pipe mechanical properties; Providing engineering support to operations (remote or in-situ), including analysis of HDD key performance indicators (KPI) to evaluate and adjust to unplanned drilling conditions, and troubleshooting equipment failures; Utilizing Civil3D, MS Project, and AutoCAD software on HDD projects, with emphasis on designing, developing, and optimizing HDD downhole tooling and equipment such as fluid pumps, mud motors, and fishing tools; and Selecting appropriate Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) for HDD applications. *Work from home authorized 1 day a week. License: Must have or be able to acquire Professional Engineer license within one year of employment. Travel: 20% domestic travel required to client sites.
