About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company at the Beaver Valley Power Station. [BVN]

As a Nuclear Engineering Specialist, I&C Maintenance Engineering at the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Plant, responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical support for the I&C Maintenance Department to maintain excellent material condition of systems, structures, and components.

  • Assuming responsibility for Predictive Maintenance at the station, including obtaining system responsibility for the seismic monitoring system at both Beaver Valley units.

  • Developing engineering solutions to technical issues in support of plant maintenance and conducting all

  • predictive maintenance in assigned discipline.

  • Providing technical input to maintenance craft in the implementation of work, including interpreting vendor manuals, drawings and schematics, and determining tolerances and values required by field representatives.

  • Troubleshooting station components and systems, and developing and implementing troubleshooting plans.

  • Evaluating site maintenance processes and implementing standardized changes to optimize maintenance costs, work quality, and availability.

  • Executing technical testing in the field, including surveillance and performance testing, and developing and maintaining associated procedures such as Maintenance Surveillance Procedures (MSPs).

  • Providing input to documents associated with temporary and minor modifications.

  • Developing and completing investigations and corrective actions in accordance with the Corrective Action Program (CAP).

  • Performing field walk downs and interfacing with maintenance craft to resolve emergent shop and plant issues.

  • Preparing technical reports and presentations in support of maintenance functions.

  • Interfacing with engineering to resolve design and licensing basis issues

  • Interfacing with and coordinating activities performed by outside engineering and consulting service companies related to maintenance work.

  • Managing and completing assigned activities to support the timely implementation of required plant operations.

  • Performing Emergency Response Organization (ERO) duties as assigned.

An employee hired at the Senior Nuclear Engineering Specialist level will be expected to perform all of the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner. Further, the Senior Nuclear Engineering Specialist level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those listed above, including:

  • Educating and directing others on technical subject matters, improve element programs and process effectiveness, and make significant contributions to the achievement of element goals and objectives

  • Leading diverse projects / processes / programs

  • Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements

  • Integrating strategic, technical concepts into business unit activities; providing strategic direction across department

Qualifications at the Advanced Nuclear Engineering Specialist level include:

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years professional-level experience in the nuclear industry or 8 years of related professional-level experience in a non-nuclear industry required

  • Must possess a working knowledge of power plant systems, structures and components.

  • Familiarity with nuclear power plant design and licensing basis documents and the processes used to maintain them is preferred.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to make technical presentations to all levels of management.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

  • Prior multi-department experience is preferred.

  • Must reside within site-specific ERO response time.

Qualifications at the Senior Nuclear Engineering Specialist level include all of the above, plus:

  • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience in the nuclear industry or 10 years of related professional experience in a non-nuclear industry required.

  • Ability to interact with both industry and company peers, as well as all levels of FENOC management.

  • Superior written and oral communication skills.

  • Viewed as a technical expert in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access; SAP a plus

  • Should possess strong organization and analytical abilities.

  • Should demonstrate a questioning attitude and demonstrate a strong commitment to nuclear safety culture.

  • Ability to lead by example

  • In-depth understanding of applicable, technical products and/or services and of customer needs and expectations

  • Model active learning through continuing to develop breadth of knowledge, skills, and perspective

  • Desire to continue to learn and grow, work across FirstEnergy, deliver results, and manage others

  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines; Coach others in effective decision making
