Clearway Energy Control Systems Commissioning Engineer in Scottsdale, Arizona

What The Role Is

The Control Systems Commissioning Engineer is a highly valued member of Clearway’s SCADA & Control Engineering team. This individual will leverage their technical expertise to lead commissioning efforts for Clearway’s utility scale solar and wind power generation plants. While the primary focus of this role is commissioning, this individual is expected to provide supplemental support for other aspects within the team, including operational troubleshooting, controls performance optimization, and compliance testing. This position requires the ability to work a flex schedule to support emergencies or commissioning tests. This position includes up to 25% travel to US based office and plant locations.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead the design, performance, and execution of plant controls, post FAT and through the commissioning phases of new assets and acquisitions.

  • Provide guidance for EPC SCADA Integrator by pulling requirements, responding to RFIs and collaborating on control algorithm development.

  • Coordinate and perform site acceptance testing, including ISO required testing, in accordance with regulatory body standards and customer requirements, documenting results.

  • Review EPC design elements related to SCADA & Controls equipment and software algorithms, addressing any shortcomings prior to O&M turnover.

  • Conduct training on new plant controls system specifics, HMI interfaces, system architecture and expected trouble points as part of turn over to the O&M team.

  • Baseline and improve performance of renewable plant control algorithms through the use of data analytics and simulation modeling tools.

  • Perform NERC and/or ISO compliance testing in accordance with regulatory body standards on operational sites on an as needed basis.

  • Pursue continuous improvement by keeping abreast of industry standards and implementing innovative new designs to enhance plant reliability and performance.

  • Support Clearway’s cybersecurity strategy, ensuring defense in depth mechanisms are implemented on SCADA & Controls equipment as specified.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program required.

  • Minimum 4 years experience within an Engineering discipline

  • Minimum 1 year experience within Control Systems Engineering

  • Competent knowledge of power plant control systems architecture and software

  • Working knowledge and prior programming of SEL RTAC or comparable plant control devices such as PLCs

  • Ability to interpret NERC, ERCOT, WECC, CAISO & ISONE regulations

  • Knowledge of industry standards and trends

  • Familiarity with Software change management best practices

  • Strong Verbal and written communication skills

  • Highly data driven and analytical

  • Competent knowledge in Engineering Principles and Processes

  • High proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word & Outlook

  • Project management skills

  • Customer focus driven

What Would Be Nice

  • Direct experience with Grid Tied Power Generation controls not required but highly valued

  • Renewable Energy plant controls experience not required but highly valued

  • Working knowledge of control system requirements for electrical generation management

  • Experience programming in IEC 61131-3 Logic Engine, specifically Structured Text

  • Experience with OPC, Modbus, SEL, EtherNet/IP and DNP3 protocols

  • Understanding of network security protocols and cyber security standards

  • Experience with integration of Energy Storage Systems with Renewable Plants

  • Experience with programming substation relays (GE, SEL, etc.)

  • Knowledge of IT networks and telecommunications infrastructure

  • Ability to Teach, Train & Mentor

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations

$115,000—$140,000 USD
