The Project Engineering(or Hydro)Geologist(or Geophysicist) is involved in a variety of geotechnical engineering projects with a focus on data collection and interpretation in support of foundation engineering, emphasizing design-build delivery methods for electrical transmission and distribution projects. The Project Engineering(or Hydro)Geologist(or Geophysicist) interfaces with a multi-disciplinary engineering team consisting of civil, structural, geotechnical, and various construction management personnel.

This role is primarily an office-based position to execute both pre-construction geotechnical investigations, geologic hazard assessments, and construction-phase monitoring services. Periodic fieldwork is also expected. At the Project level, the Project Engineering Geologist will be expected to apply advanced engineering and geologic principles to solve complex problems. A successful candidate is able to utilize geologic judgement, field observations, and digital technologies such as LiDAR and GIS to assess and quantify geologic conditions and construction risk. They may also take on the role of task/field manager on more complex projects or in a lead capacity supervising professional staff. The position may also coordinate and oversee work performed by outside design consultants in the preparation and delivery of design projects.

What You'll Do

  • Execute assignments requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out geological engineering, hydro-geological, and geophysical engineering tasks.

  • Take responsible charge of geologic surface mapping, rock and soil subsurface investigations, installation of downhole instrumentation, construction monitoring, and othergeologic

  • Provide concise technical summaries of field and laboratory data and manage/direct subcontractor activities effectively.

  • Develop complete written reports suitable for certification by a registered professional(engineer, geologist/geophysics).

  • Review geotechnical aspects of technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.

  • Provide geological support to foundation construction crews.

  • Train and supervise junior staff on field and office-based protocols. Assign and manage work with technical staff, including execution of geologic figures, reports and drafting.

  • Provide coordination and communication with project management regarding scope, deliverables and schedule.

  • Manage field subcontractor activities, such as geotechnical drilling and sampling, effectively. This involves periodic fieldwork at project sites located throughout North America.

  • Work under supervision of Senior Project Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist

What You'll Bring

  • Must have an undergraduate degree (BS) in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.

  • Master’s degree or continuing education in the field of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, geophysics, hydro geology or geographic information systems is advantageous (preferred?)

  • Professional Geologist (PG) licensure, enabling practice of geology and assumption of responsible charge for geologic (geotechnical/geophysical) reporting.

  • Familiarity with use and application of systems such as the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM) rock quality scale, and other published geotechnical standard of practice.

  • Ability or interest in obtaining additional specialty registration (Geotechnical Engineer, Engineering Geologist, Hydrogeologist, Geophysicist) in the applicant’s area of expertise is encouraged.

  • Minimum 4 years relevant experience. Geotechnical work, construction management,geophysics, and geological hazard study.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for collection and analysis of geological and geotechnical data.

  • Familiarity or experience with additional specialty geotechnical and geophysical analyses tools ideal: gINT, slope stability, asst geophysical software, gINT etc etc.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
