Department Overview

PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Position Summary


The Business System Specialist functions as a liaison to internal and external vendor Information Technology team from the line of business, representing the end users and business process owners in business system requirements, analysis, design, implementations and user support. The incumbent understands user needs as well as business procedures, processes and systems for the corresponding department. The incumbent will interface with end user to plan, define and implement systems modifications, coordinates user acceptance testing of new tools and consults with the users on new solutions & features that may contribute to business process efficiencies. The incumbent will also perform feasibility analysis, develop project scope, and provide recommendations on alternative solutions, project strategy and deliverable prioritization. The incumbent prepares and delivers business users’ system needs to Information Technology and represents user needs in the development of functional specifications.

Travel to other facilities for routine meetings about 5%-10%


  • Serves as business system administration support and primary contact for end user support

  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis to derive functional business requirements

  • Coordinate requirements and deliverables with internal and external technical teams

  • Prepare user acceptance testing, training and security plans and provide training to users

  • Collaborate with business partners to develop data models in order to generate regular and ad-hoc report and analytical solutions

  • Handle user issues that arise with supported systems and tools. Address most calls independently, escalates the more complex problems to appropriate business system owners

  • Analyze and document business processes and information needs

  • Provide timely and professional responses to IT or user inquiries. Escalate as appropriate

  • Participate on teams that develop requirements for the business needs solution

  • Perform other activities such as: managing enhancements requests and prioritization, communicating with technical teams on release planning and enhancement projects, etc.



  • BA/BS in Business, Engineering, Computer Science/Information Systems, etc. or equivalent work experience

  • 2 years of experience in similar or related job functions (Business, IT or Engineering fields) that could be substituted by an advanced degree


  • 3+ years of experience in similar or related job functions (Business or Information Technology) that could be substituted by an advanced degree

  • Participation in projects of high complexity

  • Continuous education in IT and business specific areas

  • Knowledgeable about the business requirements process.

  • Detail oriented, analytical, good oral and written communication skills.

  • General understanding of the utility business.

  • Ability to work with different teams across disciplines and levels.
