Job Summary

A reservoir/petroleum engineer I is responsible for conducting the processes and analyses that are conducted within the discipline of reservoir engineering. The engineer will be responsible for learning skills to be able to independently complete projects within the group with proper technical analyses using appropriate methods and software. The reservoir engineering group will ensure proper training and expansion of skillsets to achieve these competencies. Key deliverables for this position include:

  • Annual estimation of reserves.

  • Project hydrocarbon production volumes, ultimate recovery, and economics including utility and exploration and production.

  • Preliminary economics and paying well determinations for development projects.

  • Robust technical analysis on a variety of development, workover, and special projects.

  • Robust field studies to assess future development potential and identify technical challenges as part of multidisciplinary team.

A reservoir/petroleum engineer I needs to be able to quickly learn new skills and apply them in varied and complex situations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences that are required for entry into this job include the following:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree from an ABET accredited institution

  • 0-2 years of experience

  • Experience programming in Python

  • Experience or education in the application of using open source coding languages for statistical analysis, data visualization, and machine learning applications.

  • Leadership skills as part of a technical team and a demonstratable record of promoting the knowledge and success of others.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Knowledge of physics and natural processes, notably fluid mechanics and phase behavior of gases.


For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a postgraduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Education Requirements

Bachelor of Engineering degree from an ABET accredited institution

Preferred Coursework

Candidates with coursework in sub-surface fluid flow are preferred including reservoir engineering and/or groundwater, and solute transport. Candidates with advanced Geology coursework are preferred including sedimentology and stratigraphy, structural geology, and field methods.
